4 days before Nopi and the 7 bit the dust again!!
Well the for the 3rd time this will make the 4th tranny thats gone out in the gxl.
I am sick of these p.o.s trannys they make. The only reason I didnt change it over to a tII tranny is because I had just got a light weight flywheel and a act clutch for it.This time I actaully smelled the clutch before it went out a few hours later.Thats never happened.
Shifted to 2nd gear them--clunk,clunk,clunk.

I've got an idea on what to do....
Sorry about your luck man, that sucks. You've got more patience than me - I lost one motor and chucked the whole powertain. Can't imagine swapping the trans multiple times. It's too bad I gave away the N/A 5spd I had.

I went thru the same ordeal (before I went with the T2 conversion), I bought a rebuilded tranny from Rob at pineapple racing at a GREAT price!

I use the GXL trans in the Midget and I just rebuilt it because the syncros were getting a bit weak on 1st and 2nd. Upon disassembly I only found a few parts that were really worn and only the teath on the sliders were worn a bit. I went ahead and replaced everything but the gears (still in good shape) for about $600 in parts (thanks Malloy!) since the trans has 138K on it before I ran it for 4 years.
What parts actually broke on the other transmissions that you had?
I can't see how the clutch smell is related to the trans breaking. That is a new one.

Front bearing went out---was dumping oil on the clutch--thats what was stinking up the joint.--The bamn--boom,clunk,clunk.
I keep hearing stories about changing over to a t2 tranny
its easy--no its a bitch
if anyone has done it what does it take
I was told by rx7.com --I have to change axles,rearend,driveshaft--then he said its not worth it--well no **** if you have to do all that,Then I was told in 86-to 88
i can put a t2 tranny in and not change a thing--so if anyone has done it let me
know--i can get t2 trannys all day long--n/as is harder to find.

Sounds like the front seal was leaking trans oil that got on the clutch and then because you kept driving it with a low oil level, something seized up and broke.
If you plan to install a T2 trans, it may be cheaper to keep the GXL rear and just take the drive shaft from a T2 and your GXL shaft to a shop that shortens and balances drive shafts. They can make a custom shaft that mates the T2 on one side to the GXL rear flange.
I had my driveshaft made by Perry Hall Power Equipment for the Midget. It only ran like $140. Oh, and they can modify the yokes to use replaceable u-joints (unlike Mazda's staked in u-joints).

Hell if I know.
I was talking to my father about the trannys and the fact they do this all the time
He told me its one the the worst trannys made.It really doesnt make sense why they put this peace of crap in when the turbo model is so much better. He owns
a tranny shop in North Carolina--he has hundreds of trannys there but not a single damn n/a tranny--But if you guys ever need a tranny for tII or a fd--let me know.

I hope the clutch isn't screwed up,the old tranny got the surface on the flywheel soaked and Its thrown the damn clutch out of balance--I am trying to sling it off and dry it out by driving it--no luck yet--its weird at 3000-to 5000 rpm the damn car shakes some--driving me nuts.Even in neutral and reving it same thing.
