Trouble Finding answers
Hello all. First the back story. Bought an 87 SE from some guy in FL, he informed me that the aux ports were wired open. So after inspecting things, air pump is no longer in, ACV has a block off plate, and the 5th/6th ports have a long screw in the bottom where the tube attaches. I havent been working on rotaries long enough to know whether or not the ports are open or closed. If you push on the arm slightly downward there's some movement, but not much.
The car itself has a few idle issues, especially when warmed up. I have a very steady rise in RPM's under heavy acceleration. Had a recent friend drive the car and he thinks they're open, and now wants to do it to his S5.
So now the question list.
How can I tell if they're open?
Is there a benefit to this?
What will I need to return to stock condition? (if beneficial)

I saw the S5 setup and it was running off the air pump. We noticed a few things that were different on my friends and were unsure of what I would need. Is it just the manifold that attaches where the ACV block off plate is at?

I had a similar issue with my '84 gsl-se.
I wanted to confirm the system was working and my sleeves weren't stuck so i set up my phone to record a video to see if the actuator pin was moving, and it wasn't.
I upgraded my exhaust to a racing beat road/race street port 'long primary' system but it wasn't one from a gsl-se, so it didn't have an o2 sensor bung or the back pressure tube coming out of the presilencer.
I got some tube in the same diameter as it is on the stock gsl-se exhaust and after i cut a hole in the presilencer i bended and welded the tube to replicate the gsl-se racing beat exhaust style. since my racing beat exhaust is a larger diameter it has less pressure compared to the stock exhaust, the actuators only work past 7k rpm's so after i clean the sleeves and get new actuators, hopefully they will open sooner.
I am debating wether or not i should buy the pineapple racing sleeve inserts to make the airflow more efficient.
I've included a photo here, the stock tube with the green rubber hose connects to my custom exhaust back pressure outlet.

your friend needs his air pump to activate his VDI.
Your ports are activated by exhaust back pressure so that is why the pump is gone and the ACV is removed,and stuff blocked off.
I'd suggest to your Buddy to keep his setup.It would like like crap without the VDI,and actuators working.
Your setup compromises low end,but it is Ok up top.
Try looking up a thread by Rotaryrocket88 on his VDI activation(s5 stuff on a s4 engine)..I think that it shows the way that the actuators are positioned when open on the S4..S5 does it the direct opposite way..
IDEA:..just look at your buddy's car and see how they go,then you know that yours are opposite direction to that.
