Second Gen Tach
Second Gen Tach
Anybody on this forum using a second generation car with carb and using the stock tachometer. The question is does the stock second generation tach work off First Generation distributor and coils/ignitors?
I have a 2nd gen motor in my car, and it works with the 1st gen tach getting signal from the 2nd gen coils rather than the distributer. So I assume it would work the other way since the signals seem to be the same.
I was doing some research for someone who has a second gen but now has a first gen distributor and coils in his car (carb'd).
The normal second generation car gets the tach signal from the trail ignitor and that voltage is on the order of 0.72vdc at idle and if the engine is rev'd the voltage gets as high as 2.5vdc give or take.
On a second generation car,if I look at the trail coil wires and not at the tach signal from the ignitor, I see alternator voltage of 13.5 to 14.5 vdc. Quite a difference in voltage. Before it's said, I know the tach uses freq and not varying voltage. But still, quite a bit of difference b/t 14.5 and 0.72vdc.
I'd bet the first gen trail coils show 13-14vdc on them also and not anything as low as 0.72vdc.
This other fellow says the second gen tach does not work when he uses the voltage off the trail coil (first gen coil).
So anyway, I thought I'd post a question on this forum to see if there was a second gen car using a first gen distributor/ignitors and the stock second generation tach. To see if that combination could work or not. Probably not.
