Sad News....

Well gusy, I have some sad news. I now longer have an Rx7. I went to a dealer to look at an Audi, and he gave me $1000 for my car because I fixed his computer network.

I really needed something reliable for driving around, sorry guys.

But, if you think I'm going to leave this club, well think again. I still love the Rx7s and will get another one! I also know that some of you guys need help and I'm still going to help!

I'm not just, just taking a break.

Is it a new Audi? If you're looking for something reliable, depending on age, an Audi may not have been the best choice.

It's a 99, reviews i've read on it are okay. Most of the stuff I've read about people having problem are those that can't/won't work on their own car and spend too much to fix the little things.

Your in for a ride. You should have looked into it more, and talked to more people. Once out of warranty, Audies are some of the worst cars just do to the cost of repairs and maintanence. Hopefully you won't have many problems, but 99% of the people I know and the cars I've worked on have issues and they cost more than buying an FC would.

Good Luck.

I don't want to dampen your enjoyment of having a new car, Audis are great. They handle beautifully in the wet, snow and dry and most of them have plenty of power. In my opinion, they make the best interiors in the business. But they (and any other German car) are excessively expensive in parts, even regular maintanance parts.

My experience with them is that when they start to go downhill, it's not worth fixing them and they don't hold their price.

Just stumbled across this thread... I dont think I like all the Audi talk on here, just like I don't like the Rotary talk on the Audi forums :p

I've owned an A4 for the past two years with over 100k on the clock now and it's been nothing but fantastic. Never a single problem, always starts up first click, rock solid 700 idle, boost still pulls. I just walk away from everyone in the snow, it's so much fun. Definately a Colorado car. And, it has by far some of the best looks (inside and out) for the price. I say great purchase!

Truthfully this is the first time I've ever had to defend an Audi on a non-euro site... everyone loves 'em. But I can't believe how many times I have to defend the Rotary... sheesh, unreliable myths go around fast. Another thing, I've seen way more 200k+ mile Audis on the original motor than I've ever seen RX-7's (regardless of miles). Go Audi! Go Rotary! Go away snow!

I like my Audi, it's great in the snow. Between the heated side mirrors, heated leather seats, and the all wheel drive I completely forgot about the snow once i dug the car out!

How's their resale value compared to other cars with similar starting price? How's the cost of repair once they're not under warranty? Have you ever tried driving one in the snow with the OEM summer tires?

I'd agree with everything you say above, but the issues with a European car and an Audi in particular are clear.

well, this being an rx7 forum, i think it's a pretty universal trait among us to prefer the driving experience over sheer reliability and economy (being as it is that the youngest 7 sent over here is 10 years old). while an audi may not outlast a honda or something like that, the many many thousands of miles that you'd put on a car to even make that an issue represents a significant fraction of your life. and i know where i'd rather spend my time...

There's no doubt this rings true for most of us. There's also no denying the reliability issues of some of the later Rx-7s. But if reliability is one of your main purchasing goals, you could make better choices.

Audi's are known for electric gremlins. They also sometimes have drivetrain issues.

But all in all, inside and out I love Audi interior and exterior stlying. I've always found it well engineered and attractive. Even my Dad's old 86 Audi 5000CS had a very nice interior and body on it.

Many of the new Audi's are simply beautiful.

I think the perfect car would have an Audi interior, A Mazda Suspension, Porsche Brakes, BMW headlights, a Toyota Drivetrain and I'm not quite sure yet who'd do the exterior styling.

So basically, you want a Koenigsegg?

While we're dreaming, I'd go with everything you mentioned, with an efficient and reliable turbocharged rotary. I'd have... umm... probably Aston Martin do the exterior. Or Lotus, depending on if I want to go for more luxury or sport. They both make just beautiful cars.

Audi's hold their value very well.

Cost of repair is based on how good of a consumer you are and if you can find someone that won't take you for a ride. Same can be said with all german cars. Buy a honda if you want cheap, reliable, ugly. Audi's are creatively designed, reliable and good looking cars. As with any car, if you run the timing chain 150k miles it's going to break. Do your maint. on schedule and you won't have a problem.

Yes. Driving on snow with toyo t-1s's is a ******* BLAST.

They do hold their value extremely well... Right now I can easily sell my car for more than I paid for it two years and 20k+ mi. later. Cost of repair? What cost? Give it good oil, gas, and some maintenance and they'll run forever. The 1.8T/2.7T motors are extremely stout and overengineered for their stock purposes. Only thing I know of with them is the manual says to replace the timing belt at 90k. I know of many that have broke prior to 70-80k... so it should be more like every 60k miles.

And yes, summer tires and AWD is way more fun (well, easier to control) than summer tires and RWD...

I don't know what you mean about drivetrain problems? Audi is known for having some of the strongest AWD transmissions out there (sure you're not thinking of DSMs?). I know of many racing/baja cars that swear by them. They are, afterall, precursors to Porsche trannys (especially the 01E's used in all 6-speeds since mid-90's).

I love my 2004 A4 quattro sport 6-speed.
I know that some of the older A4's (early B6's) had problems with coils packs gooing bad but other that that they are great cars.
I don't think the B5's (what you have 1999) had any problems with coils.

I love to show it off!!

Aww, sad to hear there's one less rotary on the streets in CO, but oh well... If you ever need some help workin on the Audi, I'm always around, and you have now managed to choose the 2 cars I have experience working on... As far as cost and reliability, I would say it's no worse than owning a 7 for costs, and probably a bit more reliable than your vert was. Good luck, and hope the electrical gremlins stay away!
