RX7 Emissions in IL

Does anyone know how emissions works in Kane county IL for a PRE1996 car? I am looking at replacing my wrecked RX7 with another one that has fuel mods, etc done, and I am curous if the state will require me to pass emissions 1 time even thought the rule says no more emission testing for pre 1996 ODB cars.

Anyone have any expirience?

No emissions for pre '95 or '96, can't remember which.... So you should be good to go!

Pre-OBD cars are no longer being tested. State figured out it costs too much to have the extra equipment, and the number of those vehicles still in service as time goes on is dropping quickly.

Even on cars that do require testing, as long as you're not throwing codes, you're pretty much safe. my truck has headers and race cats which do practically nothing. they just read the codes, and it passes. no questions about whats done, opening the hood, or sniffing the exhaust.

Just to clarify, it's pre-OBD-II, which translates to (typ) 95 and older, though there were some '95s that were OBD-II. Ours weren't so we're good.

So if I buy a 94 R1 with a fair amount of emmisions removed, it is no problem for me since the car is pre ODBII correct?

The only catch is it has to pass once before you are exempt, unless you buy from out of state. So basically if you own a car thats passed after the law, you never get tested again. If you buy a IL car that has already passed after the law, I think you are good to go. But if you buy a IL that has not passed since the law you may have to get it tested.

You can get the number for the emissions people somewhere online and ask about the vin, they will tell you if it needs testing or not.

RX7 emissions verified for IL

I called the emissions office and as soon as I said buy a car out of state pre 1996, the lady interrupted me with, "sir, you are not going to be required to test."

Hoorah!

I'm pretty sure this isn't true. My car never "officially" passed and I'm exempt.

I think if the car was schedualed to be tested before the new law was passed, might of still had to pass to be exempt. Not sure but I think this was the case. It's been long enough now were I don't think any pre OBDII has to pass emisions now.
