MN The Hawk Can-Am Challenge - July 16-20 @ Road America

Hello,

Anyone else planning on attending this event? Road America is the best road racing course in the country. Located near Elkhart Lake in eastern Wisconsin. Beautiful 4-mile road course with three long straights, the famous carousel turn, medium speed turns, thunder valley, elevation changes, and legendary history. See historic Can-Am cars thundering around the track! Also vintage production and race cars, big bore production cars, Ford Mustangs as featured marque (50th Anniv), formula one, indy car, IMSA, pre-war historic race cars, etc. They will all be there.

Friday night race car concours and Saturday night sports car concours in the nearby town of Elkhart Lake. The cars convoy from the track into town on public highways complete with police escort. If you've never been a part of this event before you wont want to miss it. It truly is a blast.

Not sure if a Mazda paddock will be set up at the track but there has been in the past and am assuming there will be again?

I already have my ticket and hotel reservations. Traveling from the Twin Cities in my 88 AE turbo II. Anyone else planning on attending please post. It would be fun to meet up with some of you guys/gals.

Peace

Actually you can. From Road America's 2014 brochure on the page for this event - "For a nominal fee, you can drive Road America in your own sportscar or sedan in our daily Touring activity Friday, Saturday or Sunday. Reserve your spot in advance; space is limited." I did this in my RX-7 turbo two years in a row.

Basically, they do this during the break in the schedule when the actual race competitors are having their lunch. When I did this they did a very brief inspection of my car, (making sure I had good brake pads, tires looked OK, battery was securely mounted, etc.) Then you signed your life away on the form absolving RA of any responsibility, and you agreed to drive in a reasonable manner. I believe they only allowed passing on the straights and everyone had to agree not to exceed 50 mph?, (which in actuality meant no one exceeded about 70 or 80). Basically, it was don't do anything stupid and you wont get kicked out.

I seem to recall getting about 3 laps in but again this course is over four miles long so that was still over 12 miles of driving on this legendary road course even though you are obviously not actually racing. For what it's worth the last time I actually participated in this was in 2002 so the rules may be different now. I would highly advise calling the track for details if you are interested. 1-800-365-7223.

If anyone else from the Twin City area is planning on attending this event I will be heading that way on Friday morning, July 18. It would be a blast to have an RX-7 caravan driving east across Wisconsin to the race track. Let me know if any of you guys want in and we will find a place to meet.
