experienced help wanted for newbie

hi guys,
new guy here. here's the short story;

wife and i bought a 1988 rx7 'vert. had it for about a month when it decided to quit running. engine turns, smell of gas thru the exhaust says there is gas, changed the plugs ( yes-- the right ones ), and wires.

still no start. i suspect the coils since the best spark is only a solid yellow, and not even a trace of blue. after looking at the price of replacement coils i am hoping to get a more experienced second opinion from someone more familiar with these cars before i take out a second mortgage to buy them.

will gladly pay for your time and trouble.

First off welcome,and congrats on your new 7.99% sure that it's flooded. Easy fix to get it moving is to pull the egi fuse and crank the eng. over to clear the fuel out of the eng., reinstall the fuse then try to start. The correct fix would be to replace your fuel injectors as they leaking after eng. shutdown and causing the flooding. Also you will not get a good blue spark if you just try to pull the spark plugs out and check for spark as they need the compression of the eng. to create the hot spark due to the increased dielectric of the compressed air and fuel mixture.
If this does not work or you are confused lemme know and I can clarify more or you can do a search on the subject and you will find alot more info on no start troubleshooting for an 88' rx-7.

guess i could check the spark from the coil to the wire. should be blue there.

the previous plugs were pretty crapped up. as of right now, it sounds more like an ignition problem, but i've been wrong before. i'll try the flooding fix and see if it makes a difference.

thanks for the help so far !!

You should check the compression of the engine. There is a how-to on our website

You could also do an voltage check and also an ohm check on coils and ignitors. I don't know the specific numbers your looking for off the top of my head, but they should be in the haynes manual and FSM. Where are you at in st.charles? I live off 94 and harvester off caulks hill rd.

i live on gutermuth off of ofallon road. right up the street from smith bros. auto salvage.

already checked with an ohm meter but i think that test only checks the primary side of the coil and not the secondary. so you only get an educated guess.

every other vehicle i've encountered has a nice blue spark from the wire to the plug. mine is solid yellow. there is a guy willing to sell me some here in town, but i've been so busy, haven't had the time to call.
