An engine question from a driver in Wichita, KS...

I have an '84 gsl-se w/ 96k miles. Last weekend it started smoking and burning oil like crazy. It burnt through about 4 quarts of oil in 30 miles (I wouldn't have driven that far, but I had to get back to my house). I had to pull off the highway and add oil half way. I'm not sure what's exactly wrong with the engine. Could it be an engine gasket that's gone bad?

Thanks,
Spencer

4 quarts in 30 miles? That is nuts. Is it burning it all or is it leaking out? Anyway what you described sounds to me like fairly classic symptoms of bad oil control O-rings, and if that's the case you would need to rebuild or replace the engine.

If that was not the exact problem there is still something very messed up going on, and you should have someone check it out.
