Laptop? ARRGH

I hooked the laptop up to my friend's LT-8 and it would not connect. I thought it was the computer but the dongle started getting hot and I smelled an electrical burning smell. I tried it in mine again after it cooled down and it still wouldn't connect. Did I fry it? Is it not supposed to work in an LT-8? I thought it could work in anything with an L as opposed to an M...

I hope this is under warranty.
