Handheld problem

I posted up this problem about 6 months ago with no reply so im going to try again.

The problem is when i plug in my handheld the screen just barely comes on and only glows the green. Nothing is visible just the backlight barely. Now before you say its the cable, which i thought it was initially, it isnt. I know this because i plugged the handheld directly into the ecu and still the same thing so that eliminates the cable.

Its not the handheld because it works fine in my friends car. When i plug it in with the car 'on' the amber led turns off, is this normal? I figured it was the actual 9 pin serial port that was faulty so i replaced it in the ecu and still the same problem.

Fortunately my car is already tuned so im not to worried however it still doesnt make me feel good about the situation.

Theories??

Id say its something damaged in the computer.
they are fairly simple.

You have tested cable and thats not the problem, you have test handset and thats not the problem so it has to be the computer.
