Megasquirt Will this ignition idea work?
Will this ignition idea work?
Hello
I'm currently running fuel only with my setup and i'm interested to run ignition control too. Only problem is that im currently using a distributor setup and I dont have access to second gen ignition here in South Africa. I do however have a CAS from a series 4 turbo. If I decided to run leading spark only could I use two coils such as MSD blaster coils, running to a leading plug each and then use my megasquirt to trigger them? Seeing as it would only be leading I could trigger them both at the same time i.e wasted spark could I not? Does this sound feasible? I dont have much knowledge in ignition but if you guys tell me its possible I can get to work modifying my megasquirt to work. Im have a megasquirt 2 (v3) using latest msextra firmware.
Thanks

You could do somethng similar to that which would maintain the leading and trailing plug operation. I dont know much about the MSD coils, but this should work with any coil-on-plug type coils like those off of an LS1. Run one coil to both leading plugs, build the COP (wasted spark) circuit for this coil, and connect it to the same place that you'd connect the leading coil for a stock 2nd gen leading coil. For the trailings, hook up one coil per plug, build the COP (NOT wasted spark) circuit for these coils, and connect them to the other 2 LED's (IIRC, rotor 1 trailing would be D15, rotor 2 would be D16... but i am not positive on this). To get it to work, you need to use FD trailing mode , since this fires a separate timing ignition pulse to each LED , instead of one LED always being timing, and the other being a signal to switch coils.

here is the link that i used for my mustang with coil packs and the MSD 6A box. this can maybe give you a better idea at the setup you are trying to do .
good luck. hope this helps.
