Those of you following my '76 Cosmo Restoration have probably already seen this video, but for those not following the project I figured I'd post it here.

The latest episode of my Cosmo project covers in it's entirety the installation of the MegaSquirt MS3-Pro EFI system. Like the engine build in part 12, I decided to cover the entire process in a way that would help anyone performing a similar installation. And while this specifically covers the MS3-Pro, all the information is valid for any MegaSquirt installation and indeed, any other brand of standalone as well. In this video you'll see from scratch the MS3-Pro installation from bare engine bay to fully wired and functional EFI system. Included is detailed coverage of making an ECU mounting panel, wiring in all the injectors and sensors, wiring up the 2nd gen RX-7 CAS and coils, boost solenoid, e-fan relays and other EFI related accessories.

This real world example of an installation will likely be a great help for those who prefer to see something happen instead of reading instructions (though don't throw out those instructions!).

Great install, Aaron! Other than the amount of detail you provided, my favorite part has to be, "is about as awkward as finding your mom's well worn out vibrator in the garbage..." Priceless!

 

Yes. In truth there's no reason for anyone to swap throttle bodies with one of those horrid single butterfly units unless they are making big power or are just building a track car. Now I will be pulling all the junk (thermowax, dashpot, vacuum throttles) off of the throttle body to simplify it down or remove redundancy (the MS can emulate the dashpot via the BAC, for example).

 

This is going to be so helpful to me as I am doing a megasquirt install on my fc this month!

Hey Aaron, with the new vr conditioners in the ms3-pro, are you still using shielded cable for the CAS wiring? IIRC, you listed in your walkthrough that you used microphone came to reduce EMI.

 

Yes, you still need shielded wire. Improving filtering doesn't make it ok to cheap out and run unshielded wire. Some people had too much noise with the LM1815's using shielded wire, so these should eliminate those problems.

 

Yes. The MS3-Pro comes with shielded cable for both VR conditioners. Even though the circuit is better at rejecting noise that doesn't mean that wiring can be set up in a way to generate noise. All OEM VR wires are also shielded (including the FC/FD) for this reasons.

The non-pro MS typically only comes with one shielded VR input wire on the harness, hence the need to add a second. And microphone cable works very, very well as the frequencies are in the same range as audio and this cable is designed to transfer millivolt level signals though a hostile environment noise free. Plus it really stands up to abuse.
