Upgrading MS1 to MS2 ???

I have a Megasquirt 1 ver.3 already assembled and ready to go in my 7. I just yesterday received the MS2 daughtercard so I can move up to the MS2. What do I have to change on the ver.3 board that is already built and modded for the MS1 chip? Also, what is different in the process of flashing the firmware for MS2. Is there a readme file that explains this process just as there is one for MS1?

The main thing you have to change is where the second trigger input goes... there is documentation on www.msextra.com/ms2extra which describes where the second trigger input should go, but here it is anyway:

On the 1.0.2 release, JP4 is the second trigger input

On the 2.x.x alphas, JS10 should be used for second trigger input.

In either case, you may want to add a .01uF cap across the G+ and G- wires on your lm1815 board... This really helps with noise on the second trigger.

Hey Ken,

Does the MS2 require the second trigger option or can it be ran using the single VR circuit and a modded CAS like I been running MS1? Now I realize that MS1 could be ran either way as long as shielded cable was used to cut down on the chance of noise. Is MS2 the same or is the second trigger circuit a much better way?

i'm in the same situation. looks like you will get this done before me (i haven't received my MS2 daughterboard yet), so let us know how it goes.

oh, and i believe Ken has mentioned before that the second trigger circuit may be better in situations where you might get signal noise, since the effect would be less than the missing teeth decoding.

one thing i'm wondering about, is it reading every-tooth now? i think i saw mention of that for MS2. does that apply for the rotary also?

It read every tooth before, it just didn't use them all to set timing..

ms2/extra uses every tooth to actually set timing and dwell, so ignition timing during accel/decel conditions should be significantly better.

You can use a single VR circuit and missing tooth if you like. I wrote a new noise filter that should help with some of the noise issues as well.

Thats cool Ken. Just a couple of final questions,

1) Is the noise filter you wrote incorporated in one of the firmware releases?

2) Do I still need to use Easytherm and its RX7 defaults to modify the .ini file and flash the firmware?

It is in all current releases.

Nope... once it's flashed, you go to "tools" and do the sensor calibrations there in megatune.

Well I finally had some time this evening to try installing the MS2 daughter card and try to power up the Megasquirt and flash the MS2-Extra firmware.
Now keep in mind that I built this Megasquirt V3 originally using the MS1 processor.
It responded perfectly with the stim connected and I had no problems flashing that CPU with the firmware.
Today I checked its operation and it works fine with the MS1 chip.

Then I installed the MS2 daughter card and connected the stim but only get a brief weak flash from the LEDs on the stim and then nothing. There is no communication between my laptop and the MS with the MS2 card plugged in.
Is there something that needs to be done different as far as hardware assembly for this to work correctly? Please remember that this board was built for the MS1 at first so there are several components that did not need to be installed. I.E. U3, R13,D1, D2 just to name a few.

Did you change your settings.ini for ms2, and put the ms2/extra-specific ini file in place?

Did you reflash the ms2? Is the boot jumper shorted?

The MS2 doesn't come with a firmware pre-installed.

I`m not able to get the megasquirt with the MS2 daughter card to respond at all with the stim connected. It works fine with the MS1 chip installed.

If the boot jumper is shorted, and you've never put ms2/extra on the ms2, you should put ms2/extra on there, and then when that's finished, power down the unit, and un-jumper the boot jumper on the ms2 daughtercard.

It won't do anything aside from let you load a new firmware with that jumper shorted.

Does the stim need to be connected to flash to the MS2 firmware just like when flashing to the MS1?

I missed a pin when I put the jumper on. I really need to wear my glasses to keep from making an *** of myself.

I got the firmware flashed once the jumper was in place. Thanks for the help.
