More opinion than question??

Well I need a little (more like a lot) of help and hopefully someone with my similar knowledge can provide some insight.

I am having some serious issues w/ my baby and I am getting beyond fustrated and the carpooling truly sucks! ( www.rx7club.com/showthread.php?t=664149 )

Anyway so my opinion seeking question is. Since I have limited knowledge of electronics (2 EE courses) should I get involved in MS in trying to resolve my dilema w/ my baby. I was thinking of obviously going for the fuel & ignition along with running new wires since I really don't trust any of my current ones.

So please if you have already worked on a MS (btw my car is stock) using all the stock sensors and stuff would you recommend it or should I keep banging my head against the rock???

Please suggest away!

I built my first kit, an MS1 ver.3 and built the plug and play adapter.
Took a bit of time to assemble as I had never attempted anything like this in my life.
With a little time you will be able to do this, and learn much in the process.
My stock 86GXL ran well on it.
I have already built my second MS, originally as a MS1 but since muythaibxr has gotten MS2 code going for the rotary I picked up the MS2 daughtercard. This one is for my T2.....................time will tell.

Generally, if the engine won't run on the stock ECU, I don't recommend going to MS to fix it.

Get the engine running on the stock ECU, then once it runs, you can switch to MS if you want.

Switching to MS to fix a non-running engine rarely actually fixes the problem.

It also looks like you've got an S5... which means you'll have to premix if you go to MS.

thanks ddddavid.

Ken thanks for the advice. I do have a S5. Sorry for the silly question but what premix are you refering to. Read FAQ's and I can't find anything that relates.

Thanks

premix is referring to dumping 2-stroke oil in your gas tank, cause MS1/E isnt capable of controlling the S5 electric OMP. Many people do this anyway, just because they dont trust the OMP on 20 yr old cars. Search in the 2nd gen section for more on premixing

Well.. made progress on the car but not enough to make me feel that the car is going to be running anytime soon. So one more scenario...

I've been doing research about MS and reall think that it is pretty much what I need. Just got some crucial things that I keep getting confused about. I want to run fuel/ignition without BAC along with the stock sensors. So.

1. I found lots of reasearch on MS 1 but very little on MS2. (thought I saw once a post from Ken stating that he got the running on the MS2 without any issues, but I also saw a post that said the only way to set a FC or FD with MS was with MS 1. So, I am imagine that the FAQ's are a little outdated since it seems that Ken is definitely overworked. Can someone clear that up for me pls?

2. CAS.. What are the options? I would really like to go with MS 2 if possible without taking any of the teeth out. Researching this has been a little confusing.

So if my wiring is bad and I pick up the DIY harness, what else would I have to buy to get started??? (Planing on buying the stimulator, USB adapter for my laptop and the wheel for the CAS (if it is possible that I don't have to take any teeth out). Am I missing anything that anyone can forsee???

Sorry for the thousand ??'s but just trying to anticipate as much as I could.

Thanks.

FAQ is outdated, I'll fix it tonight at home. It is possible to use the ms2 with ms2/extra to run a rotary.

You can do that no problem with ms2/extra.

You'll have to make the mods listed in the FAQ for the v3 board.

Just my opinion... I bought a raged out 87 TurboII, limped it home from Georgia to Florida... That was the only time I drove it with the factory wiring and ecu. All my sensors were so messed up and wire harness cut in to I have no idea how I was able to drive it in the first place.

I decided to go with megasquirt to fix all my electronic problems. BUT... I knew the engine was good.

quasar,

Thanks. I know the engine is good also. I just still can't get the silly thing to fire up. I did decide to go with the MSII/extra just to put an end to this.

I am waiting till next week to get paid and everything will be on order. Once I get everything I will try to take as many pics and keep a log for anyone that is just as inexperienced as me. Maybe it will do some good. Plus with ppl like ken, you, topless,t2gtusin and others here I am sure with enough research and patience my baby will roar again.

I do have one question: Going through Glens Garage. So far what I am looking at.
MSII V3
MSnSpark_Extra Daugther Board- Is this the same as the *error board??
Stimulator
PC Cable & USB Adapter

Now if I am keeping good track from ken's FAQ's. I also need:

1 each 4.7K resistor
1 each 30K-50K resistor
1 each .1uF ceramic capacitor

Does that sound correct and where can I get them at?? Radio Shack or online?? I am sure that there are far more questions still but I will keep reading and till then sorry for any stupid questions.

Thanks,
Rey

if you make a list of all the small transistors, resistors and whatnot, it may make more sense to buy them online at digikey or a similar place. Are you going to build the second CAS signal conditioner? If so, you'll need an LM1815N chip too, i know that they have them at digikey, and as long as you can put together the circuit based off of the pictures, it will run fine. Good luck, diving headfirst into all of this can be a little overwhelming at first, but it will make a lot more sense as you learn more and go. If you havent already, i recommend you read the MS-extra manuals at www.msextra.com/manuals

I haven't had a chance to read the msextra manuals (still reading the megamanual). As far as the second vr conditioner I was planning on using the msn_extra_daughterboard (since I do not want to do any modifications to my CAS). <-Does that sound correct? The list of the individual res/cap is due to the mods that ken listed in the FAQ's thread (though reading them again I think I need 2 4.7K res not 1. and I am not sure if they come with the kit)

One thing that does concern me is the fact that I can not see any pictures on the FAQ's. Why is that?

The error daughterboard is a good way to go ... you will need 3 4.7k pullups for the leds ...

The faq pics have been gone since muythai changed his hosting acct iirc ... I did see a post that had a copy of them on here ...

Guys,

Holly molly that is a LOT of reading.... Well I am going to be busy the next few days trying to digest all the information. **The darn red entry warnings about fire and fire extinguishers really makes you think about what you are getting in to!!

Thanks about the correction on the resistors T2GTUS. How long is the average time for ppl to get their cars running after they get their MS??? Just curious.

Well I will keep plugging along.

I don’t think you will get much help here. But if you do plz share It's been almost a month for me. I've notice other members going on months. I'm hoping that within the next two weeks I can get her up and running with the help of one of our bros here. But I will have to travel 2 and a half hrs. North from where I live. If I can get her running I would be very happy and grateful. If I don't get any results then I will be forced to put 1k on the credit card and go Microtech. I would have 101 places then that can tune it. But I will try my best before going that route.

NP rey871 ... I'm glad to hear you are reading everything ... it won't kill you =)

I'm not sure if there is an average time ... I have seen folks get it going in a day, others weeks(those seem to have a domino effect of issues fix one, notice another etc ...)

I think it's hard to determine an average due to the complexities of integrating a standalone system alone, the "state" a car is in, and a handful of other variables ...

If you do really get stuck, you will find helpful folks here and at the ms site ...

AC, I hope that your project goes better soon. Ppl have answered all my questions so far (even the ones that sound odd to most ppl). I do hope your project (which btw nice car) gets going soon.

I personally don't have the option of the 1K for any other stand alones. This is the baby's last chance to get back to DD status.

T2, appreciate the response again. Just keep an eye out for me once the questions start rolling in..... (you guys have about week and a half before I get my stuff on my hands.....

U2 AC. Heck if I am lucky to get my car running I might visit when I go visit my kids in Orlando. Maybe by then you are an expert in tuning and I can take advantage of the opportunity.... lol..

The first time you do MS on an engine, it will take a while to digest everything (unless you're just copying someones setup and not learning whats actually going on behind the scenes). Now that i've been DDing my 7 with MS for about a month or so, and have had the chance to play with a bunch of stuff, I feel confident enough to try to give advice to others. It starts up every time (altho dies while warming up occasionally). The RX-7 has a lot more documentation done with MS than the first engine I did (CBR600 F4i), and a lot more people who can help you out.

True, it can be difficult finding a place that will tune MS, but a lot of it is seat-of-the-pants, and if you learn what you are doing and how stuff affects your engine, you can personally change your maps and settings based on new mods, poor fuel economy etc.

Sounds good to me. Whenever you’re ready to come down let me know in advance. I'm well connected with the hospitality industry down here and can get you in a 2 BR condo in a 5 star resort for a week. $200 Mins from Disney. I know you probably have a place to stay but I do it with my kids and they always have a blast.

Thanks AC. I will take you up on that maybe late fall or winter. I'll make sure I give you some heads up time.

Top<,

Thanks for the advice. I am doing lots of research about it because of my commitment to learn as much as I can from it. The other side of the story is that I will be moving south (GA-area hopefully) by SEP, so my car really needs to be running prior to that. I haven't made up my mind whether I will try to copy someones settings or not. I imagine that once I get the car running I will have (hopefully**knocking on wood**) many years worth testing and tunning.

So,, if you see me asking help is because I am struggling.. so time will tell!! lol
