Megasquirt Meganewb: To buy or not to buy?
Meganewb: To buy or not to buy?
I'm very interested in getting a Megasquirt and I have read everything that I could understand in this forum, but there's just one worry. Do you have to be an electrical engineer to get this thing plugged in and tuned? I'm looking for personal experiences from other people that have tried it out, such as what it would rate on a scale of 1-10 in terms of difficulty to get set up and running, but I don't want actual electrical engineers telling me it's really easy. Is it worth it for an average joe to get a Megasquirt?
I just finished assembling it and am now in the process of installing it in my T2. As for assembly if you can follow directions and know how to solder your half way there. If you remember those old coloring books "color by numbers" you get the idea of how the instructions work, everything from the kits is numbered and labelled and its hard to screw up if your paying attention. That said I made alot of mistakes but received lots of help from here and the msefi forum. As for installation I'll let you know how it goes

Well the last time I soldered anything was like ten years ago, but I'm sure I could learn again no problem. Lots of mistakes you say? How easy is it to mess things up permanently? What about tuning? From the screenshots I've seen on here it doesn't seem anywhere as easy to tune as something like a Power FC(the only thing I have experience with). Will I need a professional to handle it or will it be more clear to me to see it in person?
They seem easier to tune to me. I cant believe that megasquirt isnt more popular than it is. I'll be ordering one for my TII conversion. Im preparation, I bought and am in the process of reading Basic Electronics by Gene McWhorter and Alvis J Evans. You can pick it up at RadioShack. I love it, it explains things very clearly and gets into some advanced stuff near the end. For $15, you cant go wrong. It'll help you understand what you're doing and why you're doing it. I am no electrical engineer either.
