ls1 coils?

I will be running ls1 coils when I get my ms built. Do I still need to cut teeth out of the v3 ms? I want to run a split for a while but I eventualy dont want to run a split what are my options?

Thanks

why are you going to use ls1 coils? there is no coil-on-plug leading/trailing support at this point.... you'd end up having to run the leading coils in "wasted COP" mode, which kinda defeats the purpose of COP.

You'll pretty much have to do the same mods to get that to work that you'd have to do if you just ran the FC or FD ignition system.

well I have a e6k now and Im thinking of trying a ms and I was just wandering if it could be done. So youre saying if I run the ls1 coils I would be better off just to run no split and fire everything of the trailing?

not that's not what I'm saying at all.

What I meant was you'd hook both of the ls1 coils to the signal that the MS outputs for leading ignition, and fire them as 1 coil... so wasted COP. I didn't say anything about split. In fact, if you're not NA, you should leave in some split.

honestly I'm not sure why you'd switch to MS if you already have your e6k working unless it's just to learn about electronics.

ahh I see...

Yeah, I'm looking into adding support for COP on a rotary in order to run it on stock rx8's, but I'm not sure when that'll be done, and even after I finish it, there's a chance it won't get into the standard msns-extra code.

You can definitely fire the LS1 coilpacks with the MS spark outputs, however. No one I know is doing it yet, but we've tested them on the bench. They run off 5v ttl signal, they need a VREF and 12v, and a ground. Nice hot coils for the money, the Supra/AEM guys love them.

Yeah, I was pretty sure you could make them spark, but the question is using them in a rotary application with split and such.

Did anyone try this yet on a rotary? Would there need to be any other mods to the board other than those described in the FAQ for this to work with the LS1 coils?

Seems like if you ran this in FD mode and fired both the leadings off spark A and the trailings separately from B and C it should work well.

yea, it will, but muy was arguing that its not much better than the stock 2nd gen ignition system since you're still firing the leading coils in wasted spark mode instead of like a true COP setup would. It would probably be possible with a few transistors to use the FC switching signal to switch the firing pulse for the leading coils between coils similar to how the stock FC trailing coils do it, although I dont know the relative timing of the switching signal to the leading coil firing signals.

FD mode will do it, properly interfaced.

What does properly interfaced mean?

Most Haltech E6K/X installs that I have seen are done this way where the leading coils are fired in wasted spark mode, so I don't consider it too bad for the money.

I meant that one of the spark outputs does wasted leading, the other two perform trailing duty for front and back rotors. See https://www.rx7club.com/megasquirt-forum-153/fd-trail-spark-mode-582549/ .

I have rx8 output mode done now too, so true rotary COP should work.

What code base? Does D come out on JS11 like the rest of the 4 coil COPs? I do not have my MS laptop with me to d/l the latest, just wondering.

It's in ms2/extra 2.0 and later.

I believe it's like this:

(looking at the front of the MS)

Leftmost LED: Leading A
Right LED: Trailing A
Middle LED: Trailing B
JS11: Leading B

pardon me for asking this, but what ignitors are used, or do the ls1 coils have ignitors attached to them?

I'm fairly certain that the LS coils are logic level devices that need 3 connections - ground, +12 and trigger (the MS input). Yes, they have their own ignitor.

^thank you
Now to get ms2 2.0+ version to work instead of the 1.0.2 I had running a couple months back....which happened to have massive corruption problems for me....
