Reliability and tuning have been fine, as long as you know how to tune in the first place (or are willing to do a bit of reading and experimentation) MS is much more of a DIY project, whereas a haltech is typically used in a much more "hands-off" fashion.
The MS2/V3 was about $300 for all the components, probably another $75 after the DIYautotune wiring harness, soldier etc, and then $200 for the Innovate LC-1 wideband sensor and controller, plus whatever you want to spend on gauges, and if you need a serial to usb adapter

The reliability of the Megasquirt is directly proportional to the skill of the installer. In fact, this is the case with many standalones. A Haltech will end up unreliable and unusable if wired in with old speaker cable and masking tape. Same with a Megasquirt.
I find tuning the Megasquirt to be just as easy, if not easier, then most other ECUs. Some of the settings are a bit obscure in their meaning but there is documentation available for everything. And you can always ask the forum.
As for cost, I always tell people to budget at least $800. Sure, it can be sometimes less, but more often then not, it is more. The Megasquirt controller may only be $450 though you need to remember that you need to buy wiring supplies, a wideband, connectors, etc. And send your injectors out to cleaning while you are wiring things up!
