Megasquirt Basic Electronics and Engine Management?
Basic Electronics and Engine Management?
I'm damn sure I want to get MegaSquirt, but, for all intents and purposes, I know nothing about electronics nor engine management. Are there any online articles that I can read that will at least get me familiar with the basics of these?
There is an entire forum out there to help with that:
http://www.msefi.com/
The megamanual:

I'm also going to say the level of patience Muythaibxr has shown is extraordinary in this forum section alone. He has not only facilitated development of the rotary code, but supported it, too!
The megasquirt is not difficult to build. There are detailed instructions for building, modifying, programming, and troubleshooting the unit, which can be found in either link above. The most difficult part I faced was the first start in the car, which makes you fix all of your mistakes

Yeah, believe it or not, a little less than 2 years ago, I didn't have the first clue about electronics aside from what I learned in high-school physics...
Building the megasquirt and learning to modify it taught me what I know about electronics.
In other words, don't let the fact that you don't know much about it now push you away from trying anyway... Just read everything you can find, read it again, and when you're done with that, read it again

Yea, what they said!! I have no experiance in electronics, and I mean NONE.
They did not require a physics class when I was in highschool and I doubt I would remember much if they had.
(there is a message in that statment
)
Anyway, I encourage you to invest the money in the kit and as others have said there is a ton of support both here and at msefi.com. My personal experiance has taught me that you will want to decide what modifications you want before you build your board. I had to remove a couple of transistors so I could put in stronger ones so the MS would operate the BAC valve among other special functions. The transistors are tiny and you need magnafication to be able to solder them in with out shorting them together. Having to remove one and solder in a second is very taxing on the board, I doubt changing it out a third time would be possible.
You could by one from ZEAL that is already assembled and has a baseline map to boot. Personally I would buy the kit and with the money I saved I`d buy a wide band O2 sensor/controller such as the Innovate LC1.
Whatever you choose have fun and keep us posted we`re here to help.

Of course it helps that the megasquirt website basically has the entire education of a 2 year electronics degree and 1700+hours worth of automotive training packed into it. Everything they taught me in both is on that site and maybe a little more.
