Stock FD vs MR2 modified

Hey all.

Was cruising along the other day with my GF in her white 97FD. When this mint looking black MR2 flew past just as we were approching a traffic light. We ended up next to him at the light but with a car seperating us so we could not chat.

Light went green so i told the missis to floor it. Turned out he was up for a little race. He gunned it too. It was abut even on take off then he pulled half a car length infront. It stayed that way through the end of 1st, all of 2nd and the first part of 3rd as we began to real him in but just as we were about to get to 4th we were at the next set of lights.

We raced again from there and the result was the same. I can only emagin what he has done to it but its defenatly not stock. Id say still stock single turbo but increased boost and a few other bits like exhaust and BOV ect ect. Nothing to worked.

It was cool, my girl did well. She will have a PFC, the cat removed and the airpump removed soon. Then we will try and find that MR2 again.

Nice death.

All they need is boost to get into the low 14s high 13s, so he wasn't worked much at all..

Yea mr2 is quick. When i first moved to NZ my dad had a nice black 1 that he bought tuned to 15psi. I dont know if that was stock boost but it had porche wheels on it and a few other bits. It was quick.

I wish we could have had a chat to the guy because we saw him another 4 times later that evening but due to traffic we were un-abel to get close and have a chat.

He had some sort of intakes on his engine lid cover, and a slight screem when he was under boost. Was defenatly quick. Would have been nice to race to the end of 4th but we werent on the highway.

I have been around our local track with about 4 turbo MR's when my FD was still TT. I rember they would keep thier 1 - 2 car spacing from me when we came out of a tight bend and head down the long straight but they seemed to run out of steem after 3rd gear. Not sure why but nearing the end of 3rd I would go by and they could not keep up after that.

Do they not have very good top end because of gearing or something?

Once she gets a few mods like dp, mp, cat-back and PFC, your girlfriends car would waste that MR2.

Stock turbo doesn't have much topend. Basically like most stock turbos out there.

Haa yea true. Power band thing aye.

Yea she should be able to beat him soon when the PFC gets here. The cat will come out and a straight pipe put in and a short shifter. Posibly a small tune on the local dyno and we should be even or just ahead of the MR2.

I can wait to tune my car, its geting close now.

mmm mr2's are sexy and they can be real fast without doing too much to em, the reason you started pulling on him in 3rd is because you've got a lot more revs to run before you need to shift than he does and around 3rd gear is when that normally starts to show itself, youll get em next time for sure.
