Poor VR4
A buddy of mine has a couple Mitsubishis. His garage queen being his 3000 GT VR4 that he has quite a few modifications done to (even though he wont get into too many details). I know he has and Apexi Commander in it as well as upgraded turbos etc. On a side note, his wife drives a Supra that has also had some tuning done, but the VR4 is his baby.
I went to his place for dinner and after dinner we went for a ride in my single RX6 turbo R1. He was pretty impressed, but has a bitterness against FDs as he has gotten beaten by them a couple of times at the race track. We got back to his place, and his wife jumped in the FD so that she could see how it drives. He went and pulled his VR4 out of the garage and decided to chase us. He caches up and starts crusing next to me. I slow down to about 30 MPH in third. He honks 3 times. I don't down shift and he gets a jump on me by a car length. By the time I reach the top of third we are neck and neck but we cut the gas as we are coming up on a intersection.
We do a U turn and start driving back the way we came. A SRT4 apperently saw us and wanted to join in as he did the U-turn with us. Now we rolling along at the same speed as before, but this time I learned and I would not get caught in the wrong gear again. Keeping it in third, I am trying to give him a head start, but he insists on lining up next to me. He honks three times I down shift and punch it. I leave him a couple of car lengths back go through third and shift to forth. I'm about 6k in fourth and and let off as I hit triple digits. He flies by me at 125 before breaking. the SRT4 is nowhere to be seen. We repeat the same exercise a couple more times with the same results.
We get back to his house and he starts making excuses about how the injectors he has on are too small and he is only running 20 psi. I let him know that I am on low boost which is 13-14 psi. He then let me drive his car, which felt like a tank after driving the FD. Respectable as it pulls pretty well, but can't turn to save its life. I do have to admit that it does everything without the drama and screaming that the FD does. Also no oil smell!
Anyway, Travis thanks for the run. I respect you and your diamonds, but unfortunately, you will have more FD nightmares and be even more loathe to race one in the future.

They are pretty nice cars but they are GTs and heavy. Travis was happy to show me the movable front and rear spoiler and huge sunroof. Plus, it has a token "insurance" back seat.

I have met your buddy before down at Silver Dollar couple yrs back. His wife has a beautiful Safair Pearl auto Supra! Georgeous and rare find. His VR4 was pretty quick back then when I was only running around low 13s, 108 trap, and all I had at the time was just an intake, DP and catback. Now would be a different story Nice kill !!

Will you be back down there this year? They invited me, but I have bad memories of that place. Maybe if I had some FD morale support...
Is your friend with the VR4 that has a personal grudge against FDs TravisVR4? I've seen him post around.
Also, you should talk him into going to the "Clash of the Titans" race at VIR. Then he'll really be butthurt

I know his green VR4 was in Sport Compact Car's Ultimate Streetcar Challenge. He didn't win... Great guy and I'm definitely not trashing him, it was just nice to smoke a worthy competitor.
By the way, on my way home from Peachtree City (yes, in Georgia they name everything after peaches), there was this kid in a Del Sol with NOPI stickers on it. I was hoping that I would not have to waste gas on him. he just pulled up next to me a gave me a thumbs up before pulling off the road. What is up with all the imports being scared of us? All the Mustang GTs and Charger RT are always trying to play. I quess they don't know what these little Mazdas can do.
that link was to a thread about the clash of the titans race...

yes, I would like to head down there soon with the warmer weather. I have a few buddies that I usually caravan along, a 8s supra, couple STIs in the 500+ hp range, a SC300 NA-T and some redneck stangs and what not...Keep me in the loop as to when you guys will be down there again. Last time I was there, I blew a tranny as well..I really should not be running with street tires with FD notorious for wheel hops. His green VR4 would not be a challenge for the single turbo FDs..
I'm sure he didn't have **** down to his Vr-4. Probably had 13G turbos or something lame like that... once you start putting TD05 turbos on there especially 3000GT's get nasty. Just ask Trevor on here, who has an FD and a 10 second Vr-4.
DO NOT underestimate those cars. I have a friend who has a 95 (2nd gen VR-4's are significantly better) and ran two Evo III 16G turbos and made over 600 to the wheels, weighed about 3500lbs from weight reduction, and pretty much annihilated most of the local cars and while running pos sumitomo tires. He pulled single turbos supras on the highway, cobras built for drag, etc. had about 4k in mods on the car (that's doing a lot of custom work and getting good deals on used parts), completely stock top and bottom end of the engine. the motors are really stout (on the 2nd gen) as long as you are mindful of the rod bearings. the drivetrain is practically bulletproof on the 2nd gens as well (although you can break synchros if you really beat on them).
VR-4's are a lot like FC's in the sense that most of the ones you see around aren't all that fast (although some of their owners think so) but there are some seriously nasty ones around. I say this because I have spent many, many hours working on VR-4's... I like them a lot. They have their own group of haters, just like we rotary guys do.

It is the 2 of March. I'm supposed to be in Miami that weekend. If I don't go to Miami, I'll definitely be there.

I just had to post this link. The only thing that got "killed" here was the RX-7. At least he went out like a hero. I like the parachute, nice touch.
