Evo 8 v FD3S
I wanted to test out my new dump pipe on Sunday night, so I headed out to the nearest safe stretch to open the car up... Naturally, I invited a mate with an Evo 8 along.
We did a series of 2nd gear through 4th gear rolling runs, and there was nothing in it. Dead heat all the way. Basically the Evo would start to surge past in gear, and then have to upshift and I'd stay in gear thanks to the wider spacing and pull back past him.
My FD3S is a Type-RS with SMB dp and PowerFC, stock otherwise. The Evo 8 was running 22psi, screamer pipe and 3" zorst. This was with an extra 75kg in my passenger seat and about 20kg of tools in the boot, the Evo was on his own and was semi stripped out- not even a radio.
Can't wait to get stuck into some more serious mods now...

sounds quick man, you should have 'im without the passenger.
a couple of weeks ago i ran an evo 9 with intake, exhaust and boost increase, about 17-18 psi and we were dead even from 60kph right out to 180kph(factory limited ).

Evo 8/9 run 21psi stock and taper at the top end.

thats pretty slow i pull on evos @ 22 psi my only mods are .......... full exhause and 720 @ 10 psi on a fc stock turbo

This is a bit hard to believe, since i do drive an evo, and a TII. not even 240's with the sr20det can keep up with the evo, and those sr20's put down about 220-250hp. When i was stock most street cars could not keep up and i ran mine at 22psi on pump. But that was a year ago, now im on a much bigger turbo, and 22 psi is not even making good power numbers (430-450hp).

hmmm i thought i said i drove an evo. and with 22 psi im running 430-450, or maybe i didnt say it like that. But Yes i have seen what a 450hp evo can do. I have also seen what a 600hp evo can do.
I am actually running 450-475 on my GT35, 23-25 psi daily on pump.
Evos run 20psi stock and taper down to about 18, atleast that wha my 8 did.

Why is it hard to believe?
An Evo weighs in at near enough to 1470kg stock, let's say 1450kg in the case of my mates one. The RX7 is listed at around 1260kg, and stock, the RX7 makes about an extra 10kw at the wheels. Which is why when i've raced bog stock ones in the past, i've beaten them pretty convincingly.
I spoke to the owner about his car, it's making 185kw at the wheels- roughly 250hp i believe. My car is making about 165kw at the wheels... So it adds up as far as i'm concerned.

Sounds like he has an RS, which is much lighter then the rest of us. No radio,Alum top.
reason why i find it hard to believe is..
Evo running Intake, Exhaust, 22psi should be putting down a fresh 330hp/300tq on 93oct If he has been tuned and that low balling it.
If he has not been Flashed(Tuned) then his fuel/air ratio is killing him, and should get flashed soon.
my 8 put down 350hp/320 Intake, Exhaust, 22psi, and 255fp. Cams put me up to 365hp, on stock turbo.
Weight is about 3260lbs which does make for a heavy beast, compared to the 2800 rx7. But for a stock 7 (250hp) to take out a moded evo that should be pushing 330 makes for a good story or a long struggle.
Although i am not disagreeing with you in the least, weight does play a big role, but so does an extra 100hp.

The op is in australia, which means his rx7 has probably got 280 hp at the motor stock?
Also, it was a highway pull, not from a stop. I don' see that this is at all unusual.

The Type-RS has the radio and all that jazz... It's basically the same as a Spirit R minus the recaros and BBS rims.
Perhaps you're thinking about the RX7-SP, with CF hood, bumpers and a few other trick bits.
Evo 8's usually put out around 135-140kw (190-odd hp) atw when stock. A Type-RS/SP/Spirit R would make about 150kw on the same dyno. They both yield similar gains from similar mods, so it's pretty safe to say that an RX7 will usually be a quicker straight line car car than the Evo, when comparing vehicles with similar mods.

oh yeah in australia they did come with a bit more power, unsure of the evos there. But here in the States evos Dyno all day 230-270hp stock( to the wheels)
run 19-20 psi stock and taper to about 14-16 by redline.
I dont see the rx7 taking him in 2 and 3rd, but i do see him catching up in 4th gear as stated in the original post going from 2-4th gear. And if the guy has the mods that he says he has, he should be pushing 330hp. Maybe he wasnt a good driver. hehehe J/K

Here a lightly modded Evo8 vs an FD from a 3rd gear roll the Evo gets eaten alive. Sadly a 60mph roll an Evo8 is dead even with my 1994 Ford Taurus SHO... My SHO has a K&N filter and exhaust, the Evo8 had exhaust, intake, and a mild clutch. The car wasn't built to perform well in the top end. It does well for straight lines from a dig and on courses where handling is important... But from highway rolls. It disappoints
