Audi A4 (stock) vs. '88 GXL (modded)

Me and my friend were driving home from work. We got on the highway and neither of us sped onto the highway. After driving on the highway a bit, with him trailing behind me, he pulled up next to me. There weren't any other cars around, and so I down shifted into 3rd, going about 45-50. I waited to see his car jump before I got on it. The first time he jumped, I started to get on it, and he let off, so, I did to. The second time he jumped, I got on it, and he stayed on it. I didn't pull like crazy on him, but I slowly walked. This was with my VDI tied shut. So, no power after 5.5k to 6k.

I got up to about 90 or so before we slowed down. Still no cars, but it was a fun run.

(My VDI was tied shut because the electronics to make it move weren't working. So, I just tied it shut until I could get it working again.)

This race was about a week ago. Since then I have fixed the VDI. God I love how it pulls at high RPM. We are taking it to the track this time though. Just a couple more days. Yay!

Well, not a huge feat, considering that I think the A4 has about 170 HP stock, that is at the crank. It is the 1.8T motor.

Mine... well, it's all in the sig.

LoL. RS6 will own me. haha.

All I know is that it is a 1.8t. I think it is a 2002 or 2004? Not 100% sure. I'll check, but i know it is a newer one.

What oil do you suggest?

That would make it a B6. The 1.8t engines have a flaw in their design, they get alot of oil sludge. To save room the (insert name of part, having mind blank) has a really small mesh filter in it. When poor quality oil/conventional oil is used in them they block it up and bye bye goes the engine. Audi is well aware of it, and they will fix it if you have all your oil change recipets with you. In some cases they will even shell out for a whole new engine if the damage is bad.

Ways to help reduce it is to increase the oil in the system. Use the biggest possible oil filter and add in an oil cooler. I'll find out what oil we use on them at work. Think its like a 5W30, but expensive **** $20 a litre here in Aus.

I believe that problem was mainly with the earlier 1.8T's. A B6 should not be as susceptible to this problem, although no car is immune to it. If you perform regular oil changes with a good synthetic the car should be fine.

The 1.8T is actually quite a nice engine when taken care of, they can make some decent power and on an Audi you have the added bonus of Quattro if the car is equipped with it. I would gladly own any 1.8T A4Q as a daily (I used to have a 1.8T Jetta).

there is a TSB on the 1.8t's depends on the engine code but you replace breather hoses and pcv valve. usually only when you get a low oil pressure light is when we do this. its usually caused by the oil pickup being clogged as stated before. and usually you can fix it by just pulling hte pan and replacing it, then switch to 5w40 castrol is what we use at the dealer

It's all of the 1.8t motors in the Audis. It's not so much a design flaw. Regular servicing and using the right oil and its no problem. It usually happens after the cars go off warranty and the owners start using shitty cheap oil.
