RX7 '86 FC Restoration and Tuning

Never posted here before but figured it'd be a good enough place as any to start.

Background:
My father being the nice guy that he is sold me his RX7 four years ago, he stopped driving it and was going to sell it but I knew I wanted it. Since this time I basically overspent my spending cash just getting it and am finally at a good point to where I can drop some money into it. The car itself once fixed up will get some great usage, I live on the west coast but go to school in the mountains so I get a nice 8 - 4ish spread between a lot of great driving locations for this car.

The Car:
1986 RX7 (FC) Sprts Edition - 5-speed
Everything is stock pertaining to that.
The paint is pretty chipped to hell from my father not having it covered and just being idly exposed to the elements.
The car runs perfectly and just needs a new battery, I fired it up and took it around the block a few times, nothing to crazy since it's still unregistered (I want it at least looking nice before I tour around in it)

My Project:
As of right now I know that I want it looking presentable again and then plan on tuning it up some. That said I'm getting a body shops estimate on a complete restoration repainting, probably going from its stock blue to a white or silver. I have some family that work in upholstery reconstruction that are going to refit my seats for me, thinking of leather fronts and just matching the back with some complementary material.
As far as tuning going I have no clue where to begin. I was hoping for input on this from the fantastic members of this community. As far as tuning goes I'd essential want a bit more power and better handling.

***

Any input on anything stated here would be greatly appreicated and I'd love some suggestions on any of this.
If all goes smoothly I'd like to turn this into a before and after thing. I plan on snapping some pics tomorrow and getting new ones as each step completes.

Thanks in advance for any input,
Ryan

welcome to the board, Ryan.

I moved this to the intro section simply because your questions aren't really technical in nature, but it makes for an awesome intro. good luck with the car and get some photos up when you can.
