Purchased a CYM last night
About a year ago my boss told me about a 1993 RX-7 that an acquaintance of his had stored in his garage. The gentleman was advertising by word of mouth that it was for sale. He really didn't provide much details except "low mileage" and "yellow". Right around New Years 2018 I was able to get in touch with the guy and go see the car.
Yes, that's the car parked underneath that overgrown shelf. It has spent most of it's life just hanging out under there. The story is the guy bought it in 1995 off of a used car dealer. His then girlfriend (now wife) hated the car for its harsh ride and never understood the sports cars. They got married, had 2 kids, he runs a small business, and he just never had alone time to be able to drive the 2 seater. Later in life he came down with an eye disorder and could no longer stand to look at the bright yellow paint in sunlight.
So there it sat. Every now and then he'd start it up, move it around, he even had it registered and inspected in 2012-ish, had a fuel filter replaced on it, but never got any further with the car. Now here's the kicker, he bought it with 15,xxx miles on it, and it now sits at 16,746 miles. He drove it less than 1000 miles in his 23 years of ownership.
We went back and forth on the price a bit in January and could never agree on something. I wanted a deal, he wanted his asking price and that's it. I got back in touch with him last month after seeing all those low mileage FDs on Bringatrailer and decided that I couldn't lose. Worst case I'd be able to resell it for what I paid for it.
As for the condition of the car, it isn't the greatest. The story went the original owner was going through a divorce when he sold it to the used car dealer. We think that the multiple dents on the hood were caused by an angry spouse taking out revenge. The interior is moldy but should clean up well. The R1 specific seats are in terrific shape and barely feel broken in. All the rest of the plastic looks in great shape, everything seems to work as it should. Back in January I had him charge the battery and got its first start in 3-4 years on video. It cranked and started right up, no puffs of smoke, no coolant issues, it ran very smooth.
So plans? Not sure really. Was originally thinking of cleaning it up and putting it on BaT but after staring at it for a while I've fallen in love with it. The problem is I have a '91 Miata track car and a '65 Cutlass convertible already plus my daily and my wife's. Garage space is already tight with only a single bay available. Another thought was sell the Miata and turn the RX-7 into a duel purpose car but it's so original I'd feel bad doing that to it.
In any case the car needs to be cleaned up, sorted, and enjoyed at least a little bit. These really are beautiful cars, even in yellow.

Yes!
Bring it back to its former glory even if it is just to resell it.
The "backstory" is like car guy urban legend that we can all relate to a little bit with the added David Lynch twist of the guy's eye? *cough* condition leading him not even want to look at it.

The first RX7 I saw in person was CYM when I was a teenager. I saw it a few times parked in the mall parking garage in Anchorage, the only FD I ever saw until I moved out of Alaska.

not me... 2 fd purchases within a span of a year is enough... a third one would have been over the top
although if given the opportunity for this one... probably would have
fortyounce and 1cleancym purchased this and probably used sicklyscott to secure this deal...
maybe now it gets me closer to buyin back my ol cym from them...

So, if I got it straight, this guy shows up with its new "beloved" find, detailing every aspect of mileage and conditions, wrapped in a touching story, and after a couple weeks he sells the car?
What a cohincidence. Maybe he could have thanked the forum for commercial visibility.
