CA Not an owner yet...looking at an FD

Just introducing myself!

I'm from the Bay Area and might possibly get my hands on an FD RX-7.

I've done my research before and just recently I started it up again just to keep the information fresh in my head.

My only question is; are any of you guys around the Bay Area? Reason I ask is because I'd like to find a reputable mechanic for an engine rebuild.

I've done plenty of work on other cars I've owned, just never on a rotary. If I do purchase this RX-7, I'd like to get the engine rebuilt with new seals as preventative maintenance. I already know about the reliability mods so those will be done first, otherwise it'll remain stock.

Currently drive a '98 WS6 (LS1) and the seller is very much interested in my car. Don't know if I should sell my car and buy his w/cash or perform the trade. We'll see this coming Monday.

Welcome

Plenty of forum members are from the Bay Area, including myself.

There is a regional section on the forums for CA, located here.

Probably the best rotary shop around Nor Cal is Rotor Sport located in Santa Clara.

Welcome. I'm in the Bay Area too.

I agree with funkjaw on recommending Rotorsports. Paul is awesome.

Thanks guys!

I might be picking up the FD today! Going to check it out/test drive it/etc.

Unless I need a specific thread pattern/bolt size, I doubt I'll be asking for much at all on here. You guys flame alot of 'newbies' but it's for good reason! People have to learn to take the time to research/educate themselves on something rather than ask a question and expect an answer...especially to something that's been answered countless times.

I think I could qualify to be an RX-7 owner, I'm religious about car maintenance so we'll see! I'll post pics up tonight if I do get it.

I'm an RX-7 FD owner as of 3 hours ago.

Yeah, drove the car +3hrs back to my house and wow does it handle!

No smoking at redline, upon startup, or at anytime...considering the engine was rebuilt 30k miles ago and taken care of.

The only gripes are a few interior pieces (driver side door) that are broken/missing as well as the front bumper signal/lights and not to mention the air-duct thing that's right behind the driver side tire.

Other than that and minor paint chipping, it's an awesome car.

Soon as I get paid (4days) I'm going to order an aftermarket AST to replace the stock one. Radiator has been replaced and so has the hose from the radiator with an aftermarket one so that's good. There's a GREDDY boost controller which I'm not going to mess with at all until I get a wideband installed as well as a vacuum/boost gauge. I'm not new to turbo cars at all, I've got alot of experience with them...this will just be my first rotary.

Just glad to be an FD owner now.

Here she is!

Getting Tanabe springs because even though the shocks are white adjustable Koni's, the previous owner has them on stock/cut springs. Guess he was going for that 'hella flush' look but for me the front wheels are tucked in way too much. It scrapes the fender when I turn sharply, so I'll probably get rid of the rims too.

Getting the missing front lights/side markers soon, other than that and a slightly dented front bumper the car is aesthetically fine. Motor, is top notch! Just need to tighten/replace some hoses/lines.

Oh and I'm also going to order an aftermarket AST soon.

The radiator has been replaced, as well as the hoses with aftermarket radiator hoses so that's a plus. It's also on an aftermarket downpipe so no pre-cat to worry about either.
