Newbie RX7 in CO

Hey all,
Just picked up a 88 Convertable. It's a long story but worth telling. A fella at work gave me a non-running 79 Datsun 280zx, towed that home the follwing weekend. Traded that with the kid across the street a non-running / non-titled 90 240sx. I put an engine in it and wiring, but didn't quite finish the KA24DE swap when this fella wanted to trade me this 88 RX7.

I have the back fender kit and side skirts to finish when it warms up here in Colorado. I plan on making this my Daily Driver, it seems to run very well, even though it takes forever to warm up (seems I'll be doing some forum searching real soon). The interior is in good shape but the top needs a bit of help, otherwise it needs rear struts bad.

Welcome.

Good luck with your project. Check out the FAQ thread for the 2nd gen before hitting the search button. Lots of good info archived in the FAQ threads.

Hey Gupweed,

Your ride is just on par with my '79 I'm fetching from Colorado on Tues. See if you can look at my profile and see my picture album. At least reply to my reply here and score another post. Funny how we are sometimes fated to save a machine. In your case helping others obtain their pets as well. Good luck with your project. I plan to turn mine into my daily drive as well

Thanks all!

Thanks for the replys, since my last post I've discovered that I really and I mean REALLY, need rear shocks. The back of the car is a bit squirrely when it hits a bump. And it probley doesn't help that the 245/50/15 are have negitive camber wear, near bald. I'm thinking I can deal with the tires, even in the colorado snow, but the bouncing got to go. I'm also going to remove the front wide body kit and put the OEM fenders back on, but there red and on the next warm day they need to be painted. I'm still catching up on threads, thanks for all the info folks!

Along with the shocks, inspect all the bushings, DTSS, and such back there. Make sure your links are in good condition and you have no broken or out-of-whack bolts. I hit a curb in my S5 GXL and one of the rear wheels developed a severe negative camber. It would do exactly what you are describing. Felt like the whole back end was going left and right.

I'm N.E. colorado (Greeley)... I see that you are in C.S., ever go to PPIR or PMI? Was with CODRIFT and usually hold driftshows down at ppir during the summers. Maybe you might know my 'OTHER' car...? I'm just getting into the rotory scene...

Smile Rxvert

Welcome aboard, verts are fun cars to cruise in, did you know, when the 924 Porche came out for the typicallly EXPENSIVE prices, Mazda made the Mazda rx-7, that was reasonably affordable, they handled well, and looked , I think, even better than the porche, Unofficially, It was known as the poor mans porche, but look whos getting the last laugh. We all enjoy our cars. enjoy yours.

I like your story. I got my first RX7 last week. My hubby won her on ebay. My friend made the 300 mi. trek with me to pick her up. Promptly registered her and drove around town for 3 days evaluating HOW MUCH work she really needed, and damned if someone didn't leave a note on my windshield to buy her?

I knew he wouldn't offer the $$$ it would take for me to abandon my new acquisition, but I called the # on the little slip of paper. Left a message..... "What have you got to offer?"

He called back and talked to my husband about trading for a truck (which he has been really need/wanting) and we traded titles.

Now I am looking for a 1st gen. in better condition than my first. Gotta sell my minivan.

Are you really happy with yours, now that you've had it a bit? or have you turned yours over?

CO So friendly here... :)

/QUOTE]

I like your story too..! Car's they pick you, uh? .... So far, I am happy with my vert, it could go down the road a little smoother, but time and money will fix that.. it has about 160,000 other that that I don't know for sure but I think someone rebuuilt the engine, cause it sure runs good.

If the weekend is warm enough, I'm going to paint the original fenders and install them this weekend, maybe take car of some rust spots... I'll post before after pictures.. til then
