Talking New Member with a Rx-7 S3 (12A)

Hello everyone! My name is Joe, my nephew and I just bought a Silver 84' RX-7 GS with the 12A motor. About a month ago we came up the idea of getting a project car. we thought of getting a Honda civic but we figured theres too many out there already and I remembered when my brother thought me how to drive stick shift back 18 years go. We had lots of fun with his 85 Rx-7 (13B), so I figured why not make it a project.
We searched and came up on one for $900, engines and tranny in fair condition as well as the body.
We have it in the garage and have identified some issues already... The steering is super bad (lots of play) and water pump is also bad. (leaking water). We have it up on jack stands and look forward to getting up and ready for street use.
After doing some research for now plans are to save up some cash and get a 13B T engine swap, again we are new to this rotary life and are yet to learn a lot. I will update as we do mods on the car. Any input will be greatly appreciated as you are dealing with a pair of Souther Cali Rx-7 Noobs.

way to be a 12a guy! i run a 83 rx in the SCCA Solo auto x. love the thing the 12a is a bullet proof engine if you keep feeding it oil hahaha! check out ground control for coil overs etc, racing beat for the holley intake, pace setter or RB for the exhaust and i love my illumina struts and shocks! oh ya, get some 15x9 wheels and cram some 255 rears and 235 fronts on it. drives like a go cart!
