New member advice

Hello everyone! I've recently been saving up for my dream car - an FC Rx7. I mainly wanted to know what I should look out for, what I should know, what I should/shouldn't do, and most importantly - whether or not this is a financial decision I should make. I'm 19, still live with my parents, and currently don't make too much ($17.5/hr USD) and want some advice on how much owning this car is going to cost me, and whether or not I should even buy one yet in the first place. I know I can afford it at the moment as I don't have any bills to pay besides for my phone and insurance, but I'm worried I'll end up much worse in the future.

Hopefully this post isn't too out of place, this is my first post and I'm sorry if it's too much about money and not enough about the car. But, any and all mechanical or maintenance advice about the car is welcome too. I want to know as much as I can so I can do this right.
Thanks everyone!

No offense but I would look at other options. These cars are old, and you are almost guaranteed to be on your back under the car in no time. Thats all fun and games when it's a secondary car or project. It's a whole different deal if you rely on it for regular transportation.

my last vert I was in love with the rotary as well. Add afew years and time and money and wised up and sold it...took the money and bought a reliable car.

not saying it can't be done....just that I would not do it again nor would I advise it to someone I liked

I should specify, this won't be my only car thankfully. I already own an old mazda6 that I can use to get around. Also, I work from home anyway

As an older guy wishing I could talk to my younger self. Start saving for retirement now, ask as many questions as you need to, then do it. One of the single worst things I did in my early days, spending to much money. Also, save 6 months salary, having FU money is invaluable. You will never have to sacrifice your morals for a paycheck. Unless you want to live with your patents forever, think about future housing and plan ahead. Lastly, never, ever waste your time, it is your most precious resource. If that means working on a car instaed of getting in trouble with friends, then do it. No one but yourself can make the decision on how to spend your time but you, make it worthwhiile. Best wishes, if you decide on a car or other motor sports, please be safe. Enjoy your family and friends while you can. You never know when you will have your last conversation with your best friend.

This is all good advice. Old cars are a hobby, things you spend discretionary money on. At your stage, you still have many more important things to save for and accomplish first. That being said, with buying any old car, its usually smart if you buy the best car you can find / afford. Even the best cars will most likely need something, even if it's just upkeep.

That's what I plan on doing. It'll be purely a weekend car, and I'm saving for one in good condition. I have a few thousand right now I could buy a real **** one and fix it up, but I know that won't end well. I'm trying to get up to around $14-15k, and maybe put some of that aside for repairs/parts or a future rebuild (or just to have in general, to save or for emergencies) if need be. Worst case scenario, if I get into hot water financially, I'll have the privilege of just keeping it in the garage.

We all started somewhere.
Buy a cheap one and learn how to take care of it. After a year or so, if you have any money or sanity left and if the car hasn't exploded, you might be a full fledged Rotard one day.
