New to me ‘84 GSL-SE

I picked this up from a friend today. It has been sitting in the back of his lot for 14 years when he parked it because it was overheating on him. He had removed the radiator to have it flushed but never got around to doing it. When I was a young g kid my favorite Hot Wheels car was a brown RX-7. I guess I feel like a grown up kid now.

My plan is to first figure out the radiator. Not sure if it’ll be best to have it flushed and pressure tested or just replace it with an aftermarket one. I’ll replace the hoses while I’m at it. My goal is to get it running after that. I’m sure it needs all new fluids. Then I’ll put new tires on it. The hood has an aftermarket inset scoop that is fugly. I’d like to somehow figure out what to with that. Not sure it’s best to have a patch welded in or search for an OEM replacement hood somewhere. There are a million wasp nests that I need to get rid of.

Nice! it seems like fbs attract wasps, every one ive had has had a nest LOL. You may be better off getting a new hood depending on how the "scoop" was fitted... looks like a nice start!! welcome and keep us updated! this looks like it could be a nice little ride!

Welcome to the forum and congratulations on your new GSL-SE!! The car looks to be in nice shape and very restorable!! Other than what you mentioned, do you know any of the car's history? What kind of shape is the interior in? I love the color as well! You don't see a ton of them in that color anymore. My GSL-SE is Light Beige, which is also a somewhat quirky color. Its really grown on me. I would love to see a restoration thread on your car in the 1st Gen section!

Thank you for all the welcomes! I’m excited to work on this car and it’s really cool to have encouragement from nice people like you.

The car was purchased by my friend from the original owner in Bellevue, WA with about 70k miles on it. My buddy only put another 8k miles on it before parking it. 14 years later came along and hope to rescue it.

The interior isn’t great but it’s not terrible. It has the usual cracks in the dash from the sun beating through windows, which all seem to be intact, just dirty as sin. The door and window seals are crumbly. The seats are cracked. It’s had an aftermarket stereo put in with the accompanying wires running all over the place.

I plan to replace what’s cracked and crumbly. I’d like to put in a new carpet kit too. All the cheap speakers and wires are coming out.

A build thread would be fun and would help me document my progress. I just gotta figure out how to make a thread as I’ve never really done that before, haha.

Start here: Build Threads - RX7Club.com - Mazda RX7 Forum

Come up with a fitting title, and just start documenting it like a diary. You'll find lots of people get invested in your build and will help you out if you get stuck, cheer you on to keep you motivated and share your enthusiasm at the milestones.

It should be a fun build.

As a GSL-SE owner I know you have a "diamond-in-the-rough" there, but it will be worth all the effort you put in to it in the end. In the mood for a road trip see link below.
