new guy & question

My name is Jim Jones, I live in rural SE Wisconsin
I have an 84 RX-7 project, and have worked on a few others.
I have been a development engineer in recreational industries, so I innovate, design and fabricate. I got my RX-7 back on the road last NOV in time to go into storage.
I bought the SE with 80K miles and a 12A with bad chrome in the aft housing/end plate. I bought a 1986 Mazda Marine 13B from my employer and converted it with Racing Beat parts. It runs the original Nikki 4 barrel, RB light steel flywheel, RB header/exhaust with pre-chambers and no cats.
The engine has street port primaries and bridge ported secondaries. It made 175hp at the crank as a marine engine. I assume it does better than that with the RB exhaust
I went through several jet combinations and settled on 110 primaries and 160 secondaries, but steady state running is not smooth from 2000 to 3300RPM
I re-engineered a Griffin two pass aluminum radiator and put an oil cooler core in the left tank. Two electric fans with core temp sensing.
I bought a terribly rusted 1983 RX-7 GSL as a donor for the disc/posi rear end, non-rusted firewall, windshield and misc parts.
The body is shaved, save the rear Mazda logo, no side lamps or moldings.
It has lowered springs, RB strut tower brace, Tokico shocks, and 15X7 wheels.

I am thinking about an alternative carburetor, but I feel the RB 600 CFM Holley is too big, too complex. Does anyone know if they use vacuum secondaries or a double pumper?
I would like to fabricate my spare intake for a Holley 500CFM 2 barrel. Does anyone know if that has been done? I have raced a Ford small block with the Holley 2 barrel and it worked very well.

Welcome ! Sounds like a real beauty. Do some search reading. You may want to consider the edelbrock 500 carb. Small but mighty.

Thank you.
What has been your experience with the Edelbrock 500 carb?
I have looked at the Edelbrock 1405, 4 barrel, 600CFM with vacuum secondaries.
It has lots of tuning options.

carb angst

I took a lot of time today to review threads on carb options and was introduced to the Sterling Nikki. That sounded pretty neat but I was amazed at the controversy. Worse than Ford vs Chevy, or Harley vs Honda.

I also attempted to find Sterling, but it appears that he is no longer offering carb service or parts.

My employment has required me to develop jet pumps in recreational vehicles, and I know a bit about flow. Sterling is a very bright guy. His theories and procedures were excellent.

Has anyone taken-up the Sterling mantle?

FWIW I think the closest I can come is with the Edelbrock Thunder 500. It would benefit from the RB manifold, or I might build my own.

Jim,Welcome.
Try posting your questions in the TECH section and it will give you answers faster, rather than being in an INTRO where it is just overlooked.(That is why it is stated in the Rules,it is for your benefit.)

I get it

Misterstyks, Thank you for the information. I never joined an on-line club before, or participated in a blog. I am not real "clubbie".
I am a victim of semantics. I associate "rules" with doing something questionable or illegal. I avoid breaking "rules" in all my endeavors.
"Instructions" would catch my eye and present an opportunity to learn something; which is one of my endeavors.
Thx again. jim

I've been on forums since my first tuner car, it's a great resource for vehicles. If you are having a problem someone else has had it and figured it out so us do it yourselfers have something to refrence to. Just read and search I'm sure you can find answers.

Then you must have missed this IN the Rules then Jim.
As I said the Rules contain INFO..instructions if you want to "call them that"

Rules!..READ THIS!: HOW TO ENTER THE FORUM IN 3 EASY STEPS!..read this!!
First: READ THE RULES, that is the Big Colored Thread, the first thread you see when Entering as a New Member.

DO NOT Post a Tech question until doing this Please.
DO NOT post a Tech question IN your Intro.

You may have Car problems, but you are Introducing yourself. Tech is another section completely.

ALL Threads are SCREENED, so it may take a few minutes to a few days depending on Moderator availability to read your Thread and Approve it. It will not show until it gets approved.

DO NOT RE-POST an INTRO THREAD... POST ONCE!

Patience is Key here Guys. Moderators have to read each and every one of the Introductions, so If they have to read duplicates it just means your intro shows up later rather than sooner!

***GRAB FIVE FREE POSTS (6 after approved Intro) BY FOLLOWING THE 3 EASY STEPS..******

**Please submit an Intro after you have gained the 5 Posts From the Material below.

STEP ONE

READ all the Material Posted above in the New Member's Intro Section. The threads are Marked: "Read this to increase Post Count".

Post ONCE per "READ THIS" Thread!! Your post count goes up by One.. Read and reply to all 4 and you will see that your post count is now FOUR.

IF you post more than ONCE we will WIPE THEM ALL, and you will be Warned. Do not make me PM you. I won't like it, and you definitely will not either!

It is a ONE-SHOT Deal. One POST, one thread. ZERO Exceptions.

*If you came just to Buy parts, or Sell, we suggest you go elsewhere as this is a Car club first and not the Shopping Network. Members have the Privilege of the Classifieds Section So IF you would like to be a Member Please proceed. Thank you in Advance for respecting that.

STEP TWO

Fill out the QUESTIONNAIRE and Please do so as ONE Reply. Not ten!(copy/paste the questions.) Save your Typing skills for threads. If you Double post they get WIPED.

The questionnaire is ONE Post count, so you will now have FIVE! (if you followed instructions!)

WARNING:
**Do NOT enter the threads again once you have Posted in them. IF you do I will show you the Rules.**
ANY excess posts Get WIPED so save your Typing. Intentional double posting and disregard for rules will land you in: WWW DOT NOT HERE DOT COM...

STEP THREE

**How to make an INTRO: MINIMUM Required Info.**

*First place your LOCATION in the Title. (Icons are provided, Use them if applicable). If not tell us your Location in Your Title.
*In the subject, Please provide your REAL First NAME. (ie: Jacob). No screen names or aliases.
*Tell us about your CAR, Do not make it 10 pages long! If you like, put up a picture of your Pride and Joy!
*Lastly you can share anything that you would like to be known with others. For instance, That you enjoy face painting, going for long walks on oil ridden beaches and drinking Kool-Aid from the Jug... BUT, Even if you post pics and do not have any of the Required Info, That Intro is GONE.. Car pics are nice but it is YOU who is joining the forum!

..So, NAME, LOCATION, CAR,.. smalltalk...(Equals Perfect!)

Example Of an INTRO:
(title): New Member from Alaska.
HI, I am Jacob. I live in Yakville, Alaska. I have an 1993 FD Rx7 and I am hoping to modify it with info that I read on this club. I enjoy watching Polar Bears drinking Coca-Cola!

/\/\/\Anything Less than The above required Info WILL NOT Be Approved/\/\/\.

YOUR INTRO WILL NO SHOW IF:

*You post in your Intro that you are looking for Parts,Have parts For Sale,or Even HINT of wanting to sell or Buy. (so even " I may sell my exhaust"...NOPE!.,NOT in INTRO..POOF..GONE!)
No maybe's about it, it will not get posted. Introduce YOU. That's it.
*You post and say that you have a car For Sale, or are Trading one, Looking for one or "Want to know if it is a good deal to get this car"..blah,blah..etc.. It's irrelevant to an Intro.. Tell us about YOU. (see a trend developing here?)
*You are asking Tech questions as part of your Intro. Please post questions in the TECH Section.
*No posting of Illicit material, NO CraigsList, No Ebay, No Advertising.

TECH Questions are not to ask for Parts, Cars, Services, or Car Buying advice.

Asking If you should: "buy this car, because it has.." IS not a TECH question. IT is up to you if you want to buy a car as much as it is up to you who you Date! So Personal question, personal choice! The section is not for "I am buying a car,it has this..should I buy it??" Do you Research by comparing other cars that members have and make your own decision.. Others want technical answers, since it is a Technical section and do not want to participate in your Car buying ventures.

It is also not allowed to post to sell or "free advertise" in any form (that includes SIG's) in the TECH Section. Wrong Section. You want the Classifieds.

So, ANY hints of trying to acquire anything will be Deleted. NO PM sent. Save the shopping For the Classifieds Section. That is why you do not see any "what is my car doing this?" in the Classifieds. It is obviously not the Intro and Tech section.. They post Classifieds, we post Intro's and Tech questions for New members!

They are separate sections and shall remain separate.

***THE NEW SECTION IS NOT THE CLASSIFIEDS! IF YOU WANT TO SELL, BUY, WANT, NEED, ANYTHING, POST IT IN THE CLASSIFIEDS. ***

Disregard this rule, you may find it hard to enter.

Become a MEMBER first, as our members GET to use the Classifieds!!

............

The Rules are in Many forms and in Threads all over the New Section. There should be NO reason for you to Try to create your own.If you do,you it will be Dealt with swiftly.

Please Follow the rules and respect the Forum, it's Members, and what they have to offer.

Thanks! And See you ON the Forum!

************************************************** ****

Feel free to post any questions in Tech now as this thread is not open any longer. It's not being Deleted, simply closed so you can attend to your technical problem in the Correct section.
Good luck to you.
