After completing my H22A7 (Accord TypeR) engine and transmission swap into my -92 Prelude 2.3 Si 4WS and tuning it in dyno myself with good success, i decided that more power and challenge is needed, so started to browse some JDM auctions..
I originally was going to get Autozam AZ-1 but those were too hard to get so after watching the 13B rebuild videoseries, i realized that theres nothing I should be afraid with rotaries -> let's go bidding for FD (my hero car since InitialD)
After missing at least 4 different bids on nice grade 4s, this came up:
FD3S -99 Series 8 Type-RS
Now, this was marketed on auction as Grade 4 Type-RB but charter said that it had:
- Mazdaspeed intercooler
- Mazdaspeed suspension
- Mazdaspeed 300km/h gauges
- Mazdaspeed Bodykit
- RAYS TE37(!)
- Driven 56 thousand kilometers
Only bad things were faded paint, which i knew that could be fixed because the Vintage Red always fades, I'm going to wrap the car anyway.
I was sold, bid 1.8M yen, won with 1.5M
After 2 months the car arrived to finland, now here is the kicker:
DOOR STICKER SAYS ITS TYPE RS! For some reason, auction papers had an error and I was sold and RS at price of RB...
Closer inspection tells it also has at least (i haven finished going though the car yet):
- Custom made carbon airbox
- FEED throttlebody angle
- R Magic catback
- Mazdaspeed SET brake calibers
Driving home I warmed up the car carefully to operating temps and tried it out, holy **** it goes. I've driven a lot of cars and only car that felt the same was Williams F1 FW29.. As soon as I get more in depth into tearing this car apart and figuring out exactly what was done, I'll post some more in my project topic coming up.
On the minus side:
- After getting home although the car was not running that hot cruising, coolant reservoir was completly dry, and there are only few reasons why that would happen, most of them I don't really like at this point
So here we go, you are probably going to see another rebuild thread in near future from me too
Beautiful car. Testing compression will give you a good idea of the engine's current state. Maybe someone just forgot to refill the reservoir after servicing cooling system I think this was a good buy either way though!
