New FD Owner in PHX
#2
My daily ride is a 2005 RX-8 still going strong on the original engine. The only things left I'd like to do is the BHR header/midpipe, and switch over to a full coilover setup.
I was looking for something to work on, and have always found that the FBs look like good cheap fun. I picked up one of the better examples locally from a guy who was on house arrest for robbing a bank. After he negotiated with his PO and had the breathalyzer also removed, this 1985 RX-7 GSL with 75k original miles on the 12a was mine. Being that the car has been in Phoenix/SoCal, there's no real rust, but the carb should probably be rebuilt and a new clutch installed.
After a year, I'm still not quite still what to do with this car, I'm a bit in over my head with it, but it's a learning experience and it's mostly just waiting until I can get a real garage.
My one car garage is taken by my dream car, the 1993 RX-7 Touring with 45k original miles.
I managed to find this from the original owner and have had it for about 8 months now. The guy was actually pretty clueless so I've gone through the tune up and cleaning stuff. Compression was okay before purchasing (psi in the 80's) but I know for a fact it wasn't driven hard enough.
So far I've done the following...
Fluidyne Radiator
Racing beat radiator hoses
SBG dual 25 row oil coolers (Phoenix gets hot)
SBG oil filter pedestal
Prosport gauges (water temp, oil temp, boost)
Hawk HPS brake pads
SBG SS brake and clutch lines
Ohlins DFV coilovers
New OEM Turbo Coolant hoses
and had it professionally detailed to the tune of $325, ouch.
I'll be finishing my goal to improve the cooling with a Blitz SMIC and a stealth aquamist water injection kit. Will also be getting the SBG fire extinguisher and it desperately needs new tires, it has some crappy Sumic all-seasons on there from the PO.
Otherwise I'll just be enjoying the car stockish for now. If you're in Arizona, let me know, I'm always looking for excuses to drive up through the mountains to Prescott!

Hey bro, looking good! Didn't realize that you had 3 of them (FB, FD and RX-8). Seriously need to work on finding a place with a 3 car garage and getting your **** out of that apartment complex. Looking forward to seeing you at the March Cars & Coffee event in Scottsdale.
