i personally like the way the 2nd gen looks over the 3rd. I just like the older, box look.
Depends on your finances too That was also a big factor in what i got lol.

The third generation definitly has the looks over the other generations. I wouldn't mind getting a third, But of course the price is extremly high. If the money is available, I would definitly say, get a third.

if you wreck an fb/sa, you just killed a part of history you idiot.
if you wreck an fc, ok buy a new one...
if you wreck an fd, omg i fucked up bad!unless you pay an arm and leg for insurance. Then you'll be paying an arm and 2 legs!

Ok lets get this straight right away...

2nd gen is way cheaper and a lot easier to maintain if you do it right.
It makes less power but its cheaper.

If you buy a 3rd gen it will be expensive and a pain to maintain if you run stock twins. If you buy a 3rd gen with a swap to single turbo it will be more reliable. Still expensive however.

So I would look at your finances and see what you could afford.

Both platforms have potential to be monsters it all depends on how much cash you want to drop.

true i am thinking about dropping at most 15k in this build which isn't enough for a 3rd gen but for the 2nd gen it's enough to get it running get rid of some rust fix the interior alittle just random fixes here and there

You should be able to find a good stock or slightly modified second gen for well under 5k with minor or no problems. leaving 10k for a lot of performance upgrades.

2nd gen Turbo II S5 with minor mods can be as fast and more reliable than a stock 3rd gen, however, limited parts available (89-91)

if you have 15k to work w/, buy an fd man! eventhogh you can build or buy a 550rwhp fc on that same amount, i would still buy a clean, low mileage/rebuilt, stock fd with the money. NO QUESTIONS ASKED

o and what grappler said about stock twin fds being harder to maintain/unreliable just isint true(soory dude! no offense intended). more expensive? YES, but one of my closest friends' dad has a bone stock (save for the catback) 93 R1 with 125xxx miles, runs like a champ. solo owner tho, changes oil religiously, all regular maintence on time etc. its all in how you treat them. but if your talkin about making power and doin it reliably? thats another story, you definately almost have to have a single turbo to make decent power (altho the stock HT12's are no push overs, i hear theyre capable of close to 350hp in sequential mode!), but beyond that youll need to run two turbos non-sequentially or slap a big single on there.

None taken, You are definitely right proper care will make it last a long time.
Power is what I was worried about he sounds like he wants to build it up quite a bit.
I was referring to the all the rubber hoses in the seq. system and heat issues.
That and his 15k budget.
I should have suggested what you describe later in your response about the single turbo and non seq. setups or an FD with such an existing setup.

very good point

That and his 15k budget.
yea, this is where really needs to think about their priorities. for me, if i was buying an rx7 i would spend my 15k on a clean, nice running, low miles or rebuilt, stock-ish fd (about all you'll get for that amount, might get lucky and get a slightly modded one). even tho you can get a monster 500-600whp fc for them same amount. hell, some 20b fc's go for around that price. still, the fd is just such a superior car on so many different levels, style, cool factor and rarity included, that i just couldnt see buying ANY fc (short of maybe a 4 rotor swap!!)

but thats just me!
