NY New 87rx7 owner!!

I bought a 1987 rx7 na for $400 with only 91k on it. Runs good but it overheats. I have changed the thermastat and rad cap. I will post pics later. Just going to need some help with overheating issues. I live in cny.

Welcome! That sounds like a good deal! Check the undertray, fan clutch, water pump, radiator, etc etc...

dont assume you need a new engine until you rule out some basic stuff first! Does it drink coolant or simply overheat? Like funkjaw said check to make sure the undertray is still there (can you see the ground if you look under the hood?), as well a a GOOD condition radiator, clutch fan and fan shroud. There are inexpensive options to have the stock radiator repaired. Your key to determining if the engine coolant rings were damaged is wether or not your burning coolant. Open the rad cap on a COLD engine and look for bubbles when started... etc etc. 8 years of second gen exp now, lemme know how u make out

Heres an option thats going to draw a controversy but its a viable one. Buy yourself the best copper stop leak you can afford. I use the bars bottle that doesnt require you to drain the coolant. Everybodys going to say it ruins your radiator and blocks up your coolant passages trust me it does NOT Ive used it twice and it saved me almost 2 years of no rebuild so far. Your at a point with that engine where it doesnt matter if it clogs anything, its either coming apart, or youll buy yourself a few years. You may want to add it with a spare radiator then switch to one you know is in good condition after. Say what you want...Ive had great luck with it with almost 400whp for 2 years now!

Sorry for the long absence been very busy and now the car sits. Cost to much to rebuild the motor and some stuff on the motor are going to need replacing. So now my question is there a Mazda 4 cylinder motor that will fit with out much modifications? Or i am going to sell the car for $400 to the first person with the cash on hand.
