My introduction

Hey all, I'm Nathan. I just picked up an 87 naturally aspirated rx7 to use as my new drift car after shooting a rod through the side of the block in my turbo miata. The car is pretty stock except it has the first cat deleted, the second cat gutted, no muffler, and a welded diff. Since getting the car I've done the following already: new spark plugs (NGK of course, the ones in there were autolites and had all 4 of the same plug...) new fuel filter, new oxygen sensor (the connector for which pulled off the harness and it took me hours to get re-attached since i could only see about an inch of the wire...), and a fuel pump cut-off switch since the car floods everytime I shut it off.

Some issues I'm dealing with right now, I'm trying to get the car through CA smog first and foremost. I've already bought a new pre-cat, but after discovering the primary is gutted I'll be picking up one of those too. Before the end of today I'll probably set the ignition timing and adjust the TPS. For some reason the car idles around 1500 rpm, including during warm-up which from what I've read so far it's supposed to idle around 3k and then after warmed up should be about 750 rpm. The car also backfires every time I shift if I were giving it more than half throttle. Also, I found the hose coming out the bottom of the charcoal canister is not hooked up to anything, can someone tell me what this is supposed to be hooked up to?

Other than that it has a few other minor issues like the left front caliper leaks, one axle seal leaks, the shifter is a little sloppy, the speedometer says I'm going about 150 mph when I'm going like 20, etc. but all stuff I can fix in due time. Overall the car is really clean inside and out and for the $500 I paid for the thing, I can't complain! I'm not new to cars at all but I know very very little about rotary engines, so I'm hoping this will be a fun learning experiment.
