Since I was about 10 years old I've wanted an rx-7, and I have always gone back and forth between an FB and and FC. I was looking for an auto-x toy and possible project car for the summer, and after having quite a few 300zx's and other rx-7's fall through one finally worked out this week. I picked up an 87 rx-7 GX with ~153,000km on it for $800. The body is a little bit rough (but almost perfectly straight), the exhaust is rusty, the shifter is loose, the A/C doesn't work and the interior is quite dirty and broken, but that is fine. In my opinion, this is the stuff project cars are made of. I have a daily driver so this is strictly a fun and project car to me.

I got registration and insurance for it and drove it home last night. Fortunately it was an almost completely uneventful drive home. This car is really behind on some very basic maintenance, so the first thing I am doing is completely catching it up on that, and fixing the shifter and speedometer so that I can start enjoying it. The first auto-x events start in late April, but I am hoping to be out at these events starting in mid May.

I have spent the last 3 months casually reading the forums here hoping to find an rx-7 in the classifieds section, but there is still a lot I have to learn.

Once I get this car moving and on the road I am going to address the rust and possible body damage on the driver's door. I lost my last project car to rust so I have a deep rooted hatred for it and plan on exterminating it. I don't have the money to spring for a proper paint job right now but I will at least touch it up so that it mostly matches and is properly protected once I am finished removing the rust.
