Just bought an FD RX-7 in NorCal

Hi I just bought a beautiful Silver RX-7 from a guy who was really crazy about this car -- he's done all kinds of upgrades -- many of them would improve reliability, but the rear rotor doesn't have compression on two chambers, so maybe lost one apex seal and was selling it because he didn't have space for it and just had a kid so it looked like a great deal!

The car still drives even without compression on those two chambers but it's a bit weak in the low-end and sometimes has trouble starting (maybe normal?)

Here's the complete mod list he had:

Engine
~Motor rebuilt with all new parts (not a reman)
~3mm seals, street porting, enlarged cooling ports, dowel pinned motor all done by Rick's Rotary Performance in Pleasanton(the renowned RX7 mechanic)
~Mazda 99spec Twin Turbos (newer Japan versions a lot more efficient than stock twins)
~M2 Medium intercooler upgrade with Spal pusher fan
~Smog Pump friendly crossover pipe
~Greddy elbow and intercooler full hard pipes
~M2 Carbon Fiber Cold Air Intake with dual K&N Lifetime filters and M2 hard pipes
~HKS Twin Power ignition box
~Unorthodox Racing full under drive pulley kit
~RC Engineering 1300cc secondary injectors
~Nippondenso High flow competition fuel pump
~Mazda Competition aluminum racing radiator
~Samco fiber reinforced radiator hoses
~Ast elimination kit
~Polished intake manifold and throttle boddy to match pipes
~Full Hose Techniques silicon vacuum hoses
~Solid urethane motor mounts
~Starter motor
~Battery relocation kit. Battery moved to right rear bin behind the passenger seat.
~Tein hood shocks (elimates hood prop rod)
~Magnecor Spark Plug Wires and NGK Plugs

Engine Tuning (made 325HP at the wheels which is about 380HP at the motor at only 12lbs of boost). Would be 420HP at 15PSI
~Dyno Tuned by Steve Kan (#1 RX7 tuner in the U.S. flown in from Texas) PRT Performance | Lewisville Performance Shop | Dallas Auto Services | Dyno Tuning
~Apex'i Power FC stand alone computer with commander
~Datalogit Power FC computer box with USB
~PLX R500 wideband O2 (</title> <meta name="robots" content="index, follow" /> <meta name="GOOGLEBOT" content="INDEX, FOLLOW" /> <link rel="canonical" href="http://www.boostcontroller.com" /> <link type="text/css" href="//ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/libs/jqueryui/1.8.4/themes)

Transmission
~Mazda Japanese '99 spec tranny installed by Rick's Rotary with Redline transmission fluid
~SR Motorsports 11lb billet aluminum light-weight flywheel with replaceable friction disc and counterwieght
~ACT clutch with Extreme pressure plate and street/strip sprung disc
~B&M short shifter with mazda metal shift bushing
~Genuine Mazdaspeed carbon fiber shift ****
~New clutch master and slave cylinders
~Braided stainless clutch line

Suspension
~Advance design true double adjustable(seperate compression and rebound adjustments) coilover shocks with Eibach ERS springs (rates 440lb front/360lb rear). Fully rebuildable
~Suspension bushings all replaced with Lube Groove Delrin Solid Bushings
~Brand new steering rack and tie rods replaced by Rick's Rotary
~Racing Beat Front and Rear swaybars
~Widefoot racing solid billet aluminum front swaybar mounts
~Improved Racing Heim joint front and rear swaybar links
~Cusco D-shaped aluminum front strut bar
~Rotary Performance rear trailing arms
~Brembo crossdrilled front rotors
~Hawk brake pads
~Braided stainless brake lines

Wheels
~Blitz Racing Type 3 wheels (18x9 fronts / 18x10 rears)
~Michelin Pilot Sport tires (265/35/18 fronts / 285/30/18 rears)
~Full 20 piece lug locks

Interior
~Non-Bose trunk carpet(fully covers trunk)
~MazdaSpeed Carbon Fiber Shifter ****
~Non-Bose rear decklid(no openings for Bose speakers)
~'99 spec arm rest ashtray
~New 51R battery relocated to rear passenger side bin

Exhaust
~Racing Beat dual tip stainless steel 3 inch catback system
~Rotary performance 3 inch downpipe
~High-flow catalytic converter, gutted to act as a resonated midpipe
~Also Stock OEM catalytic converter

Exterior
~'99 spec Mazda front bumper chin spoiler
~Smoked front bumper turn signals
~Clear diamond cut side markers

I'm going to have Rick rebuild the engine so it can pass smog.

I'm not sure how I feel about the under-drive pulley -- if it means driving the water pump and alternator slower that might not be such a good thing.

I'll be taking the car to the race track (not drag strip) so I'll likely need to put better brakes on the car, new tires, high-temperature brake fluid, and get a more aggressive alignment.

He also had some mazdaspeed racing seats which I might put in there.

Anyone have recommendations on what brakes to get?

Dang, just what I m looking for... Ya, stupid Smog check... Let me know how that Smog legal conversion turns out. I might be in the same boat pretty soon when I find me a good FD.

Looks great. Do you plan on doing anything to the engine? or just a basic rebuild to get it back and running properly?

Did you get this one from craigslist? I remember seeing it and was thinking of picking it up. Welcome to the club!

Well the previous owner already did a street port, dowel pinning, and coolant port enhancements, and 3mm seals, so that seemed pretty reasonable to start with. I'm still in the phase where they need to take it apart and see what's wrong. Assuming things are mostly okay, and it just needs one apex seal replaced, I'm not sure what else could be done besides a larger port?

Yes, got it from craigslist recently -- seemed like a good deal considering the condition of the car and the mods already done

So Rick has the engine out now and said the Apex seals look intact -- they were upgraded to 3mm seals last time so I guess it's good that they held up but he still has to take the engine apart to figure out why there's no compression on two chambers. Any guesses? I'll probably know the answer in about a week.

He also said the clutch looks like it's gone -- which I was a little surprised to hear because it seemed okay (fairly stiff, didn't slip) to me. The previous owner had done some upgrades in that area as well.
