IA How much is too much for first gen 7?

I have admired the first gen RX7 since the early 80s when I was teenager. I have owned several old cars over the years including a second gen RX7.

I have looked for years for an first gen 7, but I have not found the one. That may be changing I am glad to say.

I am talking the original owner of a 1985 GSL that is all original with an amazingly low 28,000 miles. The car is great, very clean and it makes makes my pulse increase. But, the price is making me give it some serious thought.

For those of you who are more familiar these cars, just how much money can they command? NADA says high retail is $5,800. Cars on ebay rarely sell for more than $2,500 to $3,000.

The seller has firmly set her price at $6,700. Anyone have any thoughts they care to share?

Appreciate your input,

Darrin

Welcome, Darrin! (or I should say welcome back since you have been a member since '04. )

The price on these cars really can vary depending on condition and mileage. Price have been going up on the low mileage cars. From what I have seen, $6700 for a car with 28k miles on it is not out of line. If it was a GSL-SE, it could command even a higher price.

Whether it is worth it or not is up to you. The real value of a car is what someone is willing to spend.

I would think about how I would use the car and what you want out of it. The problem with low mileage cars is you end up not wanting to drive them as you increase the mileage and decrease the value (these cars end up sitting a lot, which is too bad). If it is something that you want to be able to really take out and enjoy, you may look for something that has more miles, but is still in excellent condition (would be less expensive too).

Well said I have a 100% stock 93 R1 with very low miles that I acquired from a collector and it's not fun driving slow every other weekend for very short distances. Therefore I'm on the market looking for a RX that I could drive whenever however.

Price sounds fair

But I suspect you will find you truely enjoy the raw driver/car feel you will get with a first gen and will want to drive drive drive it.

I am continously tweaking on mine to make it better but really dislike not driving it, so she comes out at least once a week for a meet.

So what do you ultimatley hope this car to be? I guess that is the question to ask yourself

Good look whichever way you decide from someone who curses himself for not buying one new and so enjoy my first gen

To the op,

I have seen this situation a million times where you get someone older/out of touch with the market selling a car and asking crazy money. I wouldn't even consider paying more than about $4-4.5K for that car. It's tough but you have to ask yourself - If I paid that would I ever be able to get that money back? I bet the answer is a resounding NO in this case.

someone else also mentioned about paying so much for a car and it not being fun anymore and I 100% believe that. There's no point to have it if you're scared to run over a pebble in the road or run through a mud puddle. I have a mustang that I put together and have a fortune into it, it's more of a drag car but I built it to be able to fart around on the street occasionally. I have so much money tied up in the driveline (have close to $40K in the engine alone) that I don't even want to take it to the track.

Btw, I had an 81' RX like you describe. Was realistically about a 6/10, new motor and solid driveline. Body wasn't perfect but it was a great driver and I sold it for $1500 - and that was all I could get out of it. The internet has a strange way of inflating prices.
