Hi, I'm in the US Army stationed in Okinawa. I just got my 95 RX7 FD3S with intentions to take it to the States. I have been having a few issues with it but thanks to you guys I have been able to fix a lot of it.

Nice! If you dont mind me asking, how much did you pay? I'm in Iwakuni and just picked up a 95 with 80k and 2 years JCI for $8500

 

how easy is it to move it back to the states being military and all. Asking cause importing cars can be a nightmare.

 

I considered importing a car and researched the process, but ended up buying a US car. There are requirements and being military doesn't exempt one from the rules. I can't speak for imports from Japan as I was going to import from Canada, but information is readily available on the CBP website. Also, getting a letter of conformity (verifies emissions and safety requirements) from Mazda would be required (at least for cars less than 25 years). It's important to know that non-US VIN cars that are imported can not be registered without CBP paperwork. I believe the current import duty fee is 3% for cars.

It's really not a huge hassle and very straightforward once you know the requirements.

 

No need to overcomplicate things. Being military, so long as your car is 25 years old to the month at the time of your pcs, they will ship it to your next duty station. you can qualify for this so long as you don't already have a car in government storage Stateside and get a POV shipment put on your orders. It's that simple.
