Hello from NY - Possibly New RX-7 Owner
Hey,
I joined for a couple of reasons. One, just to dabble around, reading info about rotary land, though more importantly, Two:
I just came across a '93 FD3 and I'm seriously considering purchasing it. It's 600 miles away so I'm not sure I want to drive down there unless I'm absolutely sure I'm going to get it. It's a southern car, so rust/rot won't be an issue (that's a huge issue here in NY), so I don't think I have to worry about the body, much. Since it can't be test driven, I'm not sure how good the running gear (suspension, tierods, etc.) is in, but I'm going to go with the benefit of the doubt and say it's good.
The problem is that the motor is out of it. The owner had it rebuilt, then the mechanic left town before he could put it back in. So the sale is for the car and the motor, but the motor is not in the car. If I buy it, when I get it back up to NY I'd like to open up the 13B and see what's what in there. This will be the first time I've opened up a rotary O.O.
I am kind of concerned about possible motor condition. Assuming worst case scenario: apex seals are completely shot and the housing is scuffed (that is the worst case scenario, right?), how much would a new housing be?
I intend for this to be a mildly built / daily at some point, but for now, in Winter, with no engine in it, it's obviously a project car.
Any thoughts? Prices? Worst case scenarios? Details? Etc.?
Thanks, and hopefully if I buy it I'll be posting much more in here. Else I might just be creeping around getting good information .
Thanks!

And to think, I was like 90% sure I was going to get it.. Guess I won't be getting an FD yet . Not a big fan of the FC's and the FD's typically go for pretty high. Probably go back to reading info, now.

Maybe post up in the NE section or pm Goodfellas in the NJ area. He may be able to point you in the right direction or know some contacts where the car is located. May be able to get someone to do a scouting report for you. Who is the seller/location. Our community is relatively small and chances are someone knows this car.
Assuming the car is in good shape and engine stock and in good shape 8-10K is what I would pay. If you have some know how...getting the motor in isn't a big issue.
I'd be more worried about buying motor and car without ever knowing how it ran.

The car is sold now, though :'(.
I'm not a big fan of the FC's, so :-\. The FD's are around, but for like 10-20k depending on miles/condition/etc. Being in college at the moment I can't exactly drive across the country on any given weekend, so I've just kept an eye out, and then bam, friend stumbled upon this, and break was coming (tomorrow), so I could have made the drive down there Sat assuming my truck made it there, haha. Guess I'll go back to keeping an eye out for now (in general) . Doubt I'll stumble on another FD like that...and here in the NE everything is basically **** b/c of the salt..lose-lose.

First thing I want to do is tear it down and rebuild in Winter. Then maybe boost in the Spring . I figure when I move out to California come end of next year I can look for a nice cond FD with no rust and build that.
For now, I'm looking for a tuning project in general, but I'd like to start getting into FC's at the moment, because they're better priced for starting to build a rotary tuner, than the FD's...if that makes any sense..

I'm thinking of getting an FC now.. They're a lot more common, and a lot cheaper than FD's. May be a better introduction to the rotary world.
Or who knows, maybe some crazy piston deal will come along and I won't get a 7 altogether. Who knows what the future holds ! .
