Hey everyone,

I'm Taylor and might be in the marketing for a 1st or 2nd gen RX-7 in the near future. I'm still researching and learning as much as I can so I can make the most informed choice.

I come from a couple decades of owning old VWs and working on them. In the past couple years, I grew tired of that scene and wanted to start learning and experiencing something new.

Right now, I'll simply say that I'm looking for something Japanese built between the late 60s and mid-to-late 80s. There are a few cars I'm rather interested in, but it seems like those 1st gen RX-7s are at a good price point vs. condition (at least what I'm seeing on Craigslist looks that way).

So I'm hoping to simply learn more and see if maybe an RX-7 is the right next car for me!

LOL I don't know that I'd say for days and days. Or that I know exactly what you're talking about. 😂

But I know someone who went rotary in his beetle. However, it seems like Subie swaps are a little more popular these days.

Yeah, I'm looking forward to seeing the classifieds and what upgrades people are doing to increase driveability. Mine will likely be my daily driver and I do a little over a thousand miles a month.

 

1st gen RX-7's are one of the best sports car bargains right now. Very cheap, often low miles and in cared for condition. I think the low price is a factor of 1) the large production numbers and 2) people are afraid that the rotary is going to be unreliable. I bought a very nice turn-key 83' for very low money. There aren't many sports cars that can be had for this sort of money. I bought this car to learn how to work on cars with, it's simple and fun to drive. You get lots of looks since everyone has owned one in the past

 

Well, yeah, that definitely seems to be the case. The fact that I'm finding examples with under 100k miles on them is amazing!

I've read some people's accounts of starting issues being akin to having a British car in poor repair in cold weather. Is it really that bad or temperamental?

I bought mine with ~53,000 original miles. I've never had any difficulties starting mine. Pull out the choke and it starts immediately. Hot starts without the choke are a little more difficult, but I've never flooded it and a little gas and it starts right up. I mean it's a carburated engine but it's very dependable and no issues here. Mine is a semi daily driver for me.
