TN gearing up for my RX-7 purchase :)

Hey everyone my names adam
I'm currently driving a 2008 mustang svt and but have always had my eye on a 3rd gen rx7
This summer I'm going to be getting the mustang ready to sell and will be looking for an rx7
Is there anything I should know about variations in the 3rd gens or anything else to keep in mind when looking for my new toy?
I'm know that I don't want one that's already modified significantly as I want a relatively clean slate to start working on. I'm pretty mechanically inclined but new to the rotary motor.
Any advice for a soon to be buyer would be very appreciated. I plan to be very active here.
I'm a very do it yourself kind of guy and really enjoy projects from small as modifying headlights to as big as internal engine modification and hope to find answers to my inevitable many questions within this community.

Thanks in advance!a
-Adam

Adam,

I'm pretty sure the 3rdgen sticky covers the normal pitfalls of buying, so you might want to check there first. Thanks for taking the time to register and to also deciding to ditch that 'ol Moostang for an RX-7!

Everyone out there, remember to answer with good info and not, "search!"..

Thanks for the tip ill read through the sticky and get myself edumacated! I've found s few 3rd gens for sale but none too local. Looks like im gonna have to buy without test driving and ship which is something I've never done before and frankly I'm a little uneasy about doing that... has anyone done that and/or have any advice on that subject?

Edited for typo

Welcome and good luck! BTW, have you ever driven a rotary? You may miss your V8 torque until you get some mods in.

Also, check the regional boards...most members would be willing to go check a car out for you.

@1Bar: thanks! Ill check it out on the computer when I get home! My budget is really pretty flexible but I'm trying to stay under 15k. 13 is feasable
As far as travel goes, I'm in middle tennessee (murfreesboro) and the furthest I've driven for a car before in chicago. Past that id want to ship it

@LushCoupe: thanks! I'm really looking forward to it

@Cyrus lol if I can find one in "decent" shape for under 5k I'm keeping the mustang. :p ill always love both the tuner and muscle classes

@evot23 I have never driven a rotary, nope. Grew up with the rx7 generationn changes and fell in love all over again with every release photo. I thought about torque but hopefully with a little work, like you say, it'll still put me against my seat. The mustang is also extremely heavy >_<

Excellant idea about the regional boards, what a great community this is! I wount have ever dreamed that someone would do that for me!

P.s. I apologize for any typos, this post comes via my 2 year old Droid2... its seen better days

Hey Adam!

Sadly, I'm currently in the process of selling my 91' RX-7 convertible... I'm located in Buffalo, NY (little far from Nash..) but the car is in immaculate shape with 45,600 original miles, original paint, never seen a winter and has no modifications to give you that clean slate you're looking for. I want it to go to the right person who is going to appreciate it and take care of it as much as I have, so if you're interested, I'd be happy to provide more details, VIN, pictures, etc..

It's posted on craigslist and cars.com if you'd like to take a look.

Feel free to reach out, otherwise good luck with your search!

TN

to all the helpful folks that responded to this post last year:
Thanks for all of the help! Here's an update on my situation.

Summer of '12, while looking for a buyer for my mustang, I got hit on the interstate by a jerkoff in a monte carlo. Totaled the mustang (luckily i wasn't seriously injured).

I had full coverage insurance and gladly took the payout for something like $17000.
Needing to replace the car immediately, I wasn't left with many options.
Had to find something local that would satisfy me and that I knew I could fix if something went wrong (ruling out the rotaries for the time being).

So I found a 350z. Black 2004 6MT 3.5l V6 and I am loving it. Bought it with only 32k miles on it.

Later, my girlfriend found the car of her dreams in project status. a '91 300zx.
It's currently sitting in the garage while we slowly but surely build it up.

Next, she was due for a replacement daily driver (her 07 auto tiburon wasn't doing it for her, understandably) so she started doing research and fell in love with the series 2 rx8.
she found a 2009 rx8 6mt a couple hours away so we went and traded in the hyundai.

We are currently a 3 car family:
1991 Nissan 300zx
2004 Nissan 350z
2009 Mazda RX8

Since she bought the 8, I've had the privilege of spending some time behind the wheel and I love it. the high revving rotary is a dream to control. My rx7 lust has returned.
I've also learned a LOT about the rotary motor (albeit, completely rx8 specific knowledge and I have no idea yet how much of that will carry over to a 7) since my girlfriend and I have been researching together.

Now I'm back to the forums that I had accidentally neglected to read and research further.
I don't want to trade my 350; instead, I'd rather find a deal on a project FD to build now that I have the garage space (was in an apartment this time last year) and many of the tools I'll need already purchased.

To the "muscle-0 tuner-1" guys and gals, because my driveway/garage is now muscle free and soon to be 4x import

I'll be scouring cars.com, autotrader, craigslist, and especially the cars for sale subforum here on rx7club until I find that perfect project starter within my budget.

Just wanted to announce my return lol, looking forward to being a part of this awesome community for real this time.

-Adam

Also, I'm on my laptop but I'll update this thread with some pics of the current cars just in case anyone wants to see
