Future buyer from Oregon

Hi, I'm Tran. I'm sure these sorts of threads get posted all the time, but I'm hoping to buy a FD3S in the next few months, maybe even a year from now. I've had a Miata for a few months and autocrossed it, it's been a FANTASTIC car to learn car control and all that jazz, but I get the feeling that I'm sort of outgrowing the car. I would love to step up to a FD3S as I have a new job that pays a bit more and could save steadily.

I realize these cars aren't the most reliable, and it would be driven half the year in Oregon, occasionally to class and work, but mostly to autocross and track days. I might even consider daily driving it.

I was wondering if anyone had any kind of insight as to whether or not this is a good idea, or any other cars in the $15k price range that would suit my needs a bit better.

I've also heard about all types of cooling mods that ad to reliability, and if I were to keep the car in MOSTLY stock form, focusing all mods on handling and reliability rather than more boost or power, what I should keep my eyes out for.

Thanks!

Hey, Tran. I'm actually in the same boat; enjoying my miata at track days, but interested in learning whether an FD can be made reliable for track work. We'll see.

Boy, I'd say you don't see many of them around here... I think most people who have them keep them hidden away haha.

I've actually seen more MKIV supras then I have FDs (whatever that means...)

I have noticed on the local craigslists that they aren't hard to find. Usually not in the best shape, but hey! Wheres the fun if you don't have to earn it!!
