Future 3rd gen owner from SoCal
Hello all,
I am starting a hunt for a nice 3rd generation RX7, I almost bought a 1995 R2 back around 1997, but it was just a little to pricey at the time however in retrospect I should have just bought it. My current fleet consists of a 1995 R33 Skyline GT-R that I imported from Japan and Federalized, an Audi TTS, and a Suzuki B-King. Looking at the classifieds, it seems like RX7 pricing is pretty reasonable now with nice examples listed for 15-20K which seems not too bad.
Well, that's all I have now...I need to build up my post count to 20(!) so that I can post in the 3rd gen section so any replies to my post here by anybody will likely get a response from me so I can increment my post count!

Just curious..
if you imported a R33 GTR, did you look into importing the Spirit R from japan?
my brother lives in japan, and had the spirit R.
oh man, he let me take it to tsukuba circuit..
talk about fun, but since it wasnt my car, i was so nervous!!
was it a pain to bring it over??
if you can PM me on how that works and how much it costs, i would be interested in importing something for myself too!! i just dont know if its worth the trouble.
thanks!!

At the time, I was only thinking about a GTR. It is not worth the hassle and risk, I would not recommend doing it and I would never do it again. It worked out for me in the end, but there are so many ways the process can go wrong and then you can lose your entire investment. It's just not worth the hassle.

Thanks for the info. I totally understand the fixation on the GTR!!
You always want what you cant have..
I thought there must be a reason why i dont see more of the spirit Rs/cosmos, S15s, GTRs, lancers, and STIs, although some of them are available now. Hopefully the prices of the used R35GT-Rs will come down, so i can try one of them out!

I hear you on the R35. That is an awesome machine, still a little pricy on the used car market though. The high maintenance costs make it real important to make sure everything was done on time...apparently, lots of R35 owners skimp on maintenance...

I agree, there are lots of interesting cars for sale on this site. Based on the number of classifieds versus total overall sales volumes, a high percentage of FD owners must be members.
One thing that is kind of interesting is that an unusually large number of cars seem to be "rebuilt" or built from parts of various cars. I participate in several forums and I have never seen this kind of thing before. Also, it seems that some owners have owned many different FD's, and seem to be constantly moving a car or 2 through their hands - another thing you don't see so much on other forums. I guess this is a testament to the loyalty this car inspires.

I dont understand how we went from the 300z, supra, rx7, gtr, to honda civics and mazda speeds. the level is not the same as it was before. thanks to you for keeping the old spirit alive with your love for oldschool speed!

Hey nice clean looking Skyline - How much of a pain was it to get it legal in the US? I've had a few JDM motors in the UK but all we need to do is add a rear fog light and map for different fuel... I'm guessing with CA smog etc and CARB it's a nightmare right?

Thanks!
It was a big hassle to get it legal, the biggest issue was the safety mods and US NHTSA sign off. At the time, Motorex had an approval to do the safety mods but (unknown to me) they were cutting corners and had been caught at it. Plus, the company was more or less in meltdown. So getting the safety approval was very stressful, but with a lot of effort it got done. The emissions was actually fairly easy, although it took a long time to get the fed and CA tests done. It was a very happy day when I finally got my CA license plate and registration!
