I've only owned four cars, two of which were for probably less than a year before buying my first RX-7. It was an 86~GXL, tornado silver metallic with a red cloth interior. My current car, I've had since 1998, an 88~GTU. It's sunrise red with a dark gray leather interior. Sadly, it's really showing its age with a long list of minor but important improvements needed. We moved a few years ago and the car is no longer garaged. This may be accelerating its aging process. Over the years my wife and I periodically have had discussions about replacing the RX-7 with an electric or something more practical for hauling large items but we always decided to keep the RX-7. She loves it more than I do. We don't drive it much, mostly just to make deliveries of large items once or twice a month or so so it sits for long periods of time between use. Anyway, a couple of days ago it wouldn't start so I've come here to get advice and maybe eventually contribute. Most of the people here know more about these cars and cars in general than I ever will. It's great that this forum exists as an archive and that it still has active members. Thanks for all the advice in the past and thanks in advance for any and all future assistance. I'm here to learn.
Thanks, it's my favorite wheel style and my wife likes the red. I've always loved the shape of the FC, well the outside shape. The RX-7's main purpose is the use of its roof rack so now we keep it on all the time. It draws a lot of attention. I literally can't go anywhere without getting a compliment on it. And somehow everyone knows what an RX-7 is now so I'll get "Nice Rack" sometimes followed by something RX-7 specific. It's like what I imagine being a rock star must feel like.
The roof rack is in its third iteration. Originally the wood was attached to two pipes with four U bolts and I would take the wood off when not using the roof rack. I've since added a third pipe in the back, the second iteration, and for the third iteration, 2x2 rails so the bolts won't stick up through the wood. With this change I attached the wood with 12 screws so It's much more permanent. I will eventually make a 4th iteration as the 2nd bar prevents the sunroof from opening all the way. I'm not sure I ever opened it more than a few inches anyway but it would be nice to have the option. Besides the additional attention, that's its only fault, well that and you can't open the hatch all the way. We use the roof rack way more than the hatch so it stays on.
I like how it keeps the rain and sun off most of the car. It's very strong. I've piled on lots of lumber, drywall, plywood and heavy things throughout the years and it's nice that it's always there if you need it. We even had a small sail boat we would put on there many years ago. I should have taken more pictures of these things on the roof rack. I'll post some later after I dig them up and sort them out.
