Engine Rebuilds Concerns

I'm in the market right now for a 3rd gen RX-7. I currently own an RX-8 but always been intrigued with everything about the RX-7. My question concerns the engine. I know it was not as well built as the newer rotary and had much more tuneable power but why is that? And how reliable is this engine because I'll be going from a 2005 RX-8 to an older 3rd gen RX-7. If the engine is rebuilt is it built the same as the stock motor? Will it have problems again when it gets worked to a certain point or will it be ok for good as long as theirs no damage involved(accident, etc.)? I want to be sure if I'm going to go ahead with my decision. Please help me, I'm not familiar with this at all.

NH rx7

even the 13b that the 3rd gen had is a pretty solid engine, just like any rotary you obviously want to check for compression on each housing, being a first gen owner i couldnt really help you on what to look for specifically on the 7's through the years, but from what i hear the '94 model housed much less problems than the '93

in regards to the engine rebuild process, most highly acclaimed rotary rebuild/ tune shops will build a base engine to meet or exceed OEM requirements, most technology will surpass OEM performance though.
