Engine question from New Zealand!

Hi my name is Rick and I have joined this site as I am looking at buying a 1987 series 4 RX7.The car has been in storage for several years but it started up straight away and ran well without smoke.I have been told by a friend that if I purchase the car it would almost certainly blow its seals within a few weeks due to not being run for such a long time and if this is the case it probably isnt worth getting but I was hoping that someone on this site may be able to give their opinions as it may be helpful to me.The car was well looked after before being put into storage.Any help with this question would be greatly appreciated.Rick

Sounds to me like the guy wants to get the car himself or is just jealous. I cranked up a 12A-powered 1983 Mazda RX-7 that hadn't been run since 1994 in the year 2003...guy couldn't get it started, I towed it home, played with the wires (done all wrong) replaced ignition stuff and then cranked it up after letting it spin without plugs after pouring a little MMM down the carb. New plugs go in, fresh gas down the carb and in the tank and never looked back...at that point, it had 160 K miles...it's about to break 200K next year.

Let's see what the 2ndgen guru's have got to say.

It does sound like the guy is jealous. I would drain the old gasoline out of the tank and lines, buy and install a new fuel filter, and pour some 2-cycle oil in the lower spark plug holes. Not too much oil or you will endure a smoke show. Pour a little in, turn the engine a bit to another "face," pour a little more, and repeat one more time. Crank over the engine a little bit by hand to get the seals lubricated. Change the oil and coolant and buy new rubber radiator hoses. Most of the stuff is common sense for a car that has been sitting for a while. Likely the tires are dry-rotted to some extent too.

Aww, man, the smoke show is half the fun! Folks come running out thinking your garage is on fire and all the mosquitos disappear for a half mile radius!

The smoke show does have its uses I agree. Although the neighbors dislike it, you are right about clearing out mosquitoes. I think it is a good idea whenever you have a barbecue night., especially in this humid, bug infested South Carolina land.
