Child in Man's Body
Hello everyone. My name is Dave Gray and I live in Bay City, Michigan. I am a mechanic and I own my own repair shop in Auburn, Michigan. At my shop I repair anything I think I can make money on. Of course I repair all makes and models of cars and light trucks and I really enjoy taking barn finds and making them road worthy again. I have a special fondness for old British and European vehicles but I still enjoy anything that is unique. At my shop I also offer equipment repair, welding, trailer repair, and tractor repair 80hp and below. I really working on antique tractors and have some photos of a few I've worked on if anybody is interested.
What I do for fun: I march to the beat of my own drummer so that means I enjoy building stupid stuff. I went through a mud bogging phase so I ended up building a 4x4 1990 Geo Metro with V8 power, Rockwell military axles, and 54" tractor tires. I had a blast with that car but I grew tired of the constant repair related to having everything in mud and beating the hell out of it. I also had a 1991 Suzuki Swift GT I built to the nuts for autocross racing, and I currently have a 1985 Audi 4000 S Quattro beater I race in rallycross. I have two cars I'm building right now. One is a 1972 Honda AZ600 that has a 350 Chevy in it and rear wheel drive. This car is in a very raw state and I am currently working on some of the rust issues of the body. My latest round of stupidity is a 1983 Mercury Lynx station wagon I pulled out of the junkyard so I could build a unique "sleeper". The car has been on top of another car for about the last 15 years and is in extremely solid condition. I will be installing a turbocharged 1985 13b motor in it and converting to rear wheel drive. My goal is to get about 400 hp out of this car but leave all the patina and fading so it looks innocuous.
So that's why I'm here. I've always wanted to work with a rotary engine because I like how much punch they pack for their size. Hopefully I can glean some information from those in the know on this site and build a retarded car that will blow the doors off Camaro owners.

The 1972 V8 Honda AZ600 I'm building. This project is on hold right now while I build my Lynx. I have to do a lot of rust repair on the Honda body yet. I may even start over on the frame so I can push the engine more forward giving myself more room inside.
The Mercury Lynx in it's raw state fresh from the junk yard. The car has been in the junk yard for going on 15 years but it was stored on top of another vehicle so it is in pretty solid condition considering.

I'm sure you guys can recognize this transmission.

Firewall view of trans. I don't have it as high into the body as I want in this pic. I was trimming out the transmission tunnel a little at a time for cosmetic reasons.

This is what happens when you focus too hard with the plasma cutter and don't pay attention to the surrounding area. Sparks caught some foam sound deadener on fire under the dash. A little spritz of water and it was all good.
