Austin, Tx Rx7 Owner

I am almost certain I already posted on here but my account is telling me I have 0 posts. I own a 1993 RX7 with a 2jzgte swap R154 tranny. I will try and get a complete part list put up soon. I bought the car from a guy and it was making 574whp on race gas. I had the car retuned and made 500 on pump. Turned out when I bought the car, it had an issue in the head - still made power but for how long who knows, I had a bad experience with a local shop MZM who waisted my time and money and told me when I bought the car, the smoke pouring out my exhaust wasn't anything to worry about... I tore the car and motor apart and I am now in the process of getting it all back together. Going for 750whp this time! The head just got a 3 angle valve job from Dennis at Precision Engine, boost logic Ferrera Ti head package, basically a built head, as far as the block, I ordered upgraded piston rings and had the rods machined for larger arp rod bolts as well as arp head and main studs and new stock head gasket. The motor will be done and ready to drop in with in the next couple weeks. There are several other things I would like to do before putting the motor back in though lol... Like work on the crappy tech2motorsports wire harness conversion for one thing. Horrible job they did!

I have had nothing but issues with this car from the first shop that worked on it to a friend that worked on it. So this time I am taking my time, not letting anyone touch it but myself and someone I trust working on my car, and it's getting done right this time. I may have a few questions along the way and I certainly have items for sale so I wanted to introduce myself and get my post count up to 10 lol...

I have pics of the car on my profile page, feel free to take a look!

Welcome

Anytime you do custom work to a car, you are bound to encounter unexpected surprises - especially when entrusting it to a shop.

Check out the 3rd gen FAQ thread to learn more about whatever FD stuff you still have on the car.

Sorry to hear about your experience with MZM Performance, I've never been a fan.

I'm in Austin too, actually born and raised here. What part of town are you in?

Clay Im up in steiner ranch right now but will be moving a bit more central in a couple months. Somewhere like avery ranch or Buttercup creek... You?

Yea MZM pretty much bent me over and raped me. Charged me 5 grand for nothing. The route they even took with my car was just ridiculous. I brought them a running car and the first call I got was, hey your battery died we need to charge you to replace it along with the alternator and ground wire. They charged me a grand for a battery, alternator, ground wire and install. The battery worked, the alternator worked and the ground wire all worked just fine when I brought it to them. I didnt get any of my old parts back and to top it off my car still dies every day if I dont start it. You know what they told me, "to start my car everyday and at least run it for a few minutes..." WTF u sack of crap what did I just spend a grand on, no answer and they stopped returning my calls... They charged me a grand to rewire my fuel pumps, and install a new fuel line and fittings. You dont even have to drop the tank to do any of that work lol the pumps and wiring pull from the top of the tank all you do is lift up the friggin trunk carpet and oila. I had this long list of things I wanted to get done, they did none of it, the stuff they fixed all broke or never worked in the first place. My car still has to crank for a second to turn over which they thought was a fuel pump wiring issue which clearly it wasnt, my car still drains the battery out if I dont start it everyday. They had my car for 6 weeks too! Oh and I took them my car to look at before I bought it, the car was pouring white smoke out the exhaust, I asked them if that was an issue, they said, "not to worry about it" well turns out I had a bad seal and that white smoke was a big issue and all the money I spent with them was a giant waist of tme and money cuz my head needed rebuilt anyways. I was able to make power on the dyno just not as much power as the turbo and motor were capable of thats for sure and how long that power would have lasted we will never know. They complained about kinked fuel lines and shitty work from the previous shop, they replaced one of 3 lines and just left the kinked ones in there, when they went to reinstall the kinked lines they did the exact same thing the last shop did and left em kinked. We r talking 60-100 bucks in hose and I spent 5 grand and they couldnt replace a 60 dollar fuel line? I had a coolant leak and they didnt replace the 50 dollar hose that it needed to fix the leak. My oil pan gasket was bad and they couldnt replace the 5 dollar gasket it needed, even though I spent 5 grand and my car was making 574whp they thought an oil leak was no big deal I just needed to keep an eye on it they said. I have seem them completely rip off a few of my friends and to be honest I think they are con artist who **** over people who may not know much about their car or how to work on them. They think if you have money they can rip you off. They will talk to you like your an idiot when your not. I mean lets get real here guys, you turn a wrench it's not rocket science and guys like me pay guys like you to do it cuz we dont want to get our hands dirty and we want it done asap, not cuz we cant do it. loosening bolts and replacing parts is not hard and what little work they did was by no means worth 2 grand let alone the 5 grand they charged me. I plan to upload my invoice on here so others can see what a rip off they are and I have plenty of pics of their crappy work to provide. Everything from fraying the brand new 200 dollar fuel line and not only that they used regular wrenches on the brand new fittings I got and they are all scratched up, they left my fuel pump wires just open and loose and nothing loomed or taped up, they kinked fuel lines from using zip ties to secure the lines in the engine bay, I mean all in all bad work, over priced, took too long, horrible experience and I highly recommend not taking your car there!

It's sad to say there are so many untrustworthy shops out there. I got screwed over by a shop in north Austin that wouldn't return phone calls, over charged me, damaged the car, didn't even finish the job, and denied any of it was their fault

That's amazing how a "reputable", "performance" shop can be that challenged to fix something as simple as a parasitic battery drain and start replacing parts left and right, that's just down right stupid

I'm glad you're doing the project over by yourself, and it will be soooo worth it in the end when its running! Hit me up if you ever need/want some help on it

Welcome to the board. We're in Steiner too, UT golf area. You might see my oldest son in his black 90 vert with a Tii conversion brapping around and his 16 year old brother in his 91 gray MR2 turbo.

I'd taken my G35 coupe MT6 to MZM to see about lowering springs but didnt like em so did it myself. Glad I did!

For stuff we dont want to do or can't do (welding, diagnosing a bad knock sensor) e've been using EMS Powered who have a huge new shop down by Onion Creek. They mostly do MR2s but their chief fabricator has a 300Z with a 2JZ in it. Crazy stuff and great guys who know their stuff.

You realize that Avery Ranch and Buttercup are way the hell up in Cedar Park dont you? Not exactly "central"! Tarrytown is "central." Cedar Park is rural!

You are referring to my buddy Mark who is now working out there in Onion Creek He was working for boost logic and now that MZM fired their head mechanic Mark may be offered a spot with MZM, we shall see! But yes Mark is da man and if he werent so busy I would ask his for help but to be honest I always felt bad asking my mechanic friends to help me out, I mean they go to work for 10 hours a day then come home and dont want to see a wrench for a while lol so I never ask... I think Im gonna go knock on his door with a few grand though and see if I can entice him to help finish my car lol...

HAHA You are correct I was in cedar park before out here and alway been a lake rat so I consider avery a bit more central lololol...

I took it to a shop called "JCautospec" Up in Roundrock for an oil pan gasket

Marc's a great guy! I haven't been to the shop he's at now however. He's done a bit of work on my car, custom intercooler piping, welding on flanges, small stuff, but his work is top notch

Not sure whats up with the "SC300zx", or "2JZ31" but I hope it'll be out again soon at the local meets when they start back up

The Z31 is down, for now. Wont be long though before you guys see it again. I was at his place last night and he mentioned a new goal of 850whp... A goal I would bet money he makes lol. Not too mention I think there is no better time then now while he is trying to rebuild his monster, for me to come along and offer him cash to fix finish my car. Not sure if you guys have looked at any of my pics but I had a beauty and things went south quick and now more of the car is laying next to the car than actually on the car, it's sad lol... I think Ill go cry myself to sleep now... HAHA!

Sounds like you're moving to Northwest Austin/Cedar Park area. My brother lives in Buttercup so I'll be there all the time.

I'd like to check out the car sometime, I'm thinking of a similar flavor for my FD RX7.

No worries, it was a waist of time and money but a lesson learned lol. This time I tore the car completely apart myself, and I will be there every step of the way putting it back together with the help of a good friend. Im excited and will be starting on it with in the next couple weeks, needs to sell a Nissan S13 coupe with a ca18det swap first so there is room in the garage...
