87 turbo II or 90 gtu na?
Hello everyone, I hope everyone is doing well. I used to have an 88 gtu and it was one of the best cars I ever owned. Im looking to buy another but need help deciding. One is an 87 turbo II with the following mods-s5 turbo and door panels and streetported rebuilt motor. A greddy front mount intercooler, hks ssqv blow off valve, 550 primary 750 secondary injectors, 18in g35 rims, and a straight exhaust. The cons of this car are it needs a drivers side door handle, the intermittin wipers don't work,(work regular), missing the rear wiper arm and motor, no stereo speakers, and it needs alittle body work at the drivers side rear pillar where it was dented from someone pushing or leaning on it to hard. I can get the car for 2800 dollars. The other car is a 90 gtu na. Its all stock and everything is there. It runs well and is has 240 on the odometer but is believed to have been rebuilt sometime cause of its excellent running condition but theres no paperwork proving it has. It has 17in aftermarket rims. I can get it for 2500. I need advice on which buy you guys think would be best. Fuel milage is kind of a concern as well between the two. My name is Chris and i live in georgia. Thanks for all your time.

I bought the na, just seemed like the better choice. So i could still have the rx style with the better fuel economy. The turbo was just getting 9-10 mpg, and i ve been there before with another hotrod and it was a primary reason that I sold it. Where should I start on this one? Usual tune up stuff? I also wanna put a cold air intake on it and replace the mufflers. Whats some good choices?

Hi Chris, congrats on the new RX7! I've owned/own two RX7's, both 90 GTU's, one black and one white. I'd start with the usual tune up stuff too - at least to get a baseline average of MPG. Good luck with your car. I'm going to check back with this thread because I'm also looking for suggestions on what kind of intake to get.

Unless you have info on how recently maintenance was performed on the car, I would suggest you treat it as if no one has touched it in years. That means check all your fluids, inspect every inch of your engine bay for rotting or deteriorating hoses, etc. IMO, now is a good time to install new plugs and change your filters. Basically cover all your regular maintenance now so you know for sure what has been done. Plus it gives you an opportunity to check over all other parts of the car for damages.

You couldnt be more correct on that one pistons. I mean the car runs excellent. I've gone through the engine bay visualibly and all the hoses look great, even looks like a few new parts under there not that i know what they are yet. I know right off i need another headlight switch and subharness for it, along with another gauge mount cluster. Ive ordered plugs, and i have yet to get to the filters. Also ordered the switch, harness and bezel, not cheap. But your right, everytime i get a new/used car, changing fluids, and all the tune up stuff are the 1st things I do so i know where the start of my maintenance plan starts.

I did go with the na. I have done alittle more to it than originally planned so far, but im getting there. Ive seemed to have struggled with getting the 5th and 6th port actuators to work correctly. I now have them all loosened up and functioning. But either that kick in the pants bump in power im looking for is either less than i expected or im gonna have to pull that intake off and do some poking around. That and some other issues like the warm startup only seems to work when it wants to, have no idea if thats normal, and it seems to not want to start right off the bat. If i turn it over say 3-4 times, then let off the key, then hit it again, it starts fine.

hey chris codey here. i live in southern ga but my gtu is in oregon. im goin back for a lil while and i thought about sellin it. i really dont wanna but..the gas mileage is to bad to drive back, and to exspensive to ship. i would go na tho its older, but still sleek its a fun ride and theres so much you could do.

87 personally. i love gen 2 and it sounds pretty cosmetic in cons. if you drive allot of hwy turbos are better in mpg. see if you can pop the dent out with a blow dryer and aqua rain... i saw it on you tube. with heavier cars it take a bit longer but it works.

Here's a page describing the differences among FC models. It's not the most well-written article, however there is some good info here. Incidentally, the GTU has slightly lighter rotors, a higher compression ratio, and a 4.3 rear end (versus the standard 4.1).

Sorry, i havnt checked this post in awhile. Didn't relize id get so many more responces esp after i stated I did buy the na, lol. But thanks for all the advice. Stinks you gotta sell your ride buggy. Id try to muster up the cash to drive it here or you could try u-ship.com. Its used often on ebay for those big parts that require a pick up. Its neat really. You just sign up, and describe your cargo and what your willing to spend and all these privateers bid on your business. Alot of these guys, its all they do to make their living and most have a certain area they live and work in. They gather up a bunch of pickup and delieveries to make sure they make there money. And sonya, the dent was on the turbo not the na i bought. Im still tidying things up on it even know ive been driving it everyday. I still have work to do on it, when the warm days come around.
